Position Purpose: We are searching for an experienced Assistant Professor (Tenure Track) at our Detroit campus location. Institute of Environmental Health Sciences/Center for Urban Responses to Environmental Stressors (IEHS/CURES) is a premier research-intensive institute at Wayne State University. Successfully recruited faculty candidates are expected to maintain a track record of excellence in extramural research funding, scholarly productivity, teaching, and academic service commensurate with their faculty rank. This position is a joint position between IEHS/CURES and a department within a school/college, based on the fit for the potential candidate. Tenure track rights will be held in the department. This appointment could be 12-month or 9-month depending on the tenure or tenure track home.

Requirements

  • Candidates must have Ph.D., M.D., and/or related degree(s) in disciplines aligning with environmental sciences research and possess a demonstrated track record of and/or potential for exceptional science, creative discovery and/or knowledge translation and application.
  • Faculty are expected to either already have established extramural research funding and/or are on a clear path to secure and sustain extramural funding in support of their research programs.

Responsibilities

  • Faculty recruits are expected to engage and integrate with the NIEHS-funded CURES environmental health sciences core center (P30 ES036084) (https://cures.wayne.edu), and the Center for Leadership in Environmental Awareness and Research (CLEAR) Superfund Research Center (P42 ES030991).
  • Successful faculty recruits will also integrate with academic departments, colleges/schools, and centers/institutes consistent with their areas of expertise and shared interests and engage in all aspects of our academic mission including research, education, and service.
  • Maintain an independent, externally funded scholarship program resulting in the dissemination of knowledge through publication and other scholarly means.
  • Participate in the development of programmatic initiatives in targeted thematic areas as part of the broader IBio (Integrative Biosciences Center) initiative as requested.
  • Contribute to programmatic initiatives developing further synergy between the IEHS/CURES, IEHS/CURES-led funded centers, the Wayne State University (WSU) One Health Initiative, and the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering as requested.
  • Establish strong trans-disciplinary research collaborations that advance knowledge in environmental health sciences.
  • Engage in professional service activities including participation in study sections for grant review, leadership in professional societies and various programmatic review and development initiatives.
  • Serve as mentor to undergraduate students, graduate students, professional students, fellows, and other personnel as appropriate.
  • Provide high quality teaching in courses serving undergraduates, professional and graduate programs in environmental health environmental sciences and in the designated tenure home department.
  • Serve on departmental, college, school, and university committees as designated by the chair, provide service to local, state, and national professional or scientific organizations in areas of your expertise and interest, and participate in professional and graduate program activities such as recruiting and interviewing prospective students.
