About The Position

The University of Louisville is seeking to hire an Assistant Professor (Tenure-Track) in Guitar. The School of Music, a fully accredited member of NASM since 1932, is a member of the Kentucky state system of higher education. U of L has experienced steady growth with a current enrollment of 22,000 students, 360 of whom are enrolled in the School of Music in both undergraduate and graduate degree programs (B.A., B.M., B.M.E., M.A., M.M., M.M.E.). The guitar program typically includes 12-17 undergraduate and graduate students pursuing degrees in performance, music composition, music education, music and new media, or music therapy. The core curriculum includes applied lessons, class guitar, guitar ensemble, history and literature, pedagogy, technique class, and studio class. The School is home to the Grawemeyer Award for Music Composition, one of the most prestigious international prizes for composers, and the Frank R. Abell Young Composers Competition for New Chamber Music. The School of Music enjoys a prominent role in Louisville's rich artistic community, which includes the Louisville Orchestra, Kentucky Opera Association, the Louisville Chamber Music Society, the Louisville Ballet, the Speed Art Museum, the Muhammad Ali Center, and Actors Theatre of Louisville. Louisville is a progressive city of around 620,000 people in a metropolitan area of close to one million people with a robust economy, a vibrant arts scene, a nationally ranked public school system, and a rich history infused with southern hospitality. Requirements

  • Master's degree in guitar performance required, doctorate in guitar performance preferred.
  • Candidates without these academic credentials, but with significant experience at the professional level in chamber or solo performance and pedagogical credentials may also be considered.
  • Demonstrated current and ongoing activity in professional-level performance.
  • Record of successful recruitment, teaching, and student retention at the collegiate level.

Responsibilities

  • Teach applied guitar students in baccalaureate and master's degree programs along with teaching related courses in guitar pedagogy, guitar literature, chamber music, and class guitar.
  • Maintain an active music performance schedule and visibility as a teacher at the state, national, and international levels.
  • Recruit and retain prospective undergraduate and graduate guitar students.
  • Actively engage in research/creative activity, university/professional service, and community engagement.
  • Support and participate in the New Music mission of the School of Music.
