About The Position

The Department of Physics at the University of Alabama at Birmingham-UAB within the College of Arts and Sciences, https://www.uab.edu/cas/physics/, invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor faculty position (9-month appointment) in Physics of Materials under Extreme Conditions, starting Fall 2026. We seek rising leaders whose research explores quantum materials and advanced condensed matter at extremes, with potential applications in energy, quantum technologies, defense, and advanced manufacturing. The successful candidate will join UAB's DOE/NNSA Center of Excellence on Additively Manufactured Complex Systems under Extremes(https://sites.uab.edu/camcse/) and benefit from the Department of Physics' strategic growth in Advanced Materials, Optics, and Computation. Housed in the new Science and Engineering Complex (2023), the Department offers cutting-edge facilities and strong interdisciplinary ties across science, engineering, and medicine. For questions about this position, contact the Search Committee Chair, Yogesh Vohra ([email protected]). The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) is a comprehensive urban university with the nation's third-largest public hospital, which has rapidly evolved into a world-renowned research university and health care center that ranks in the top ten nationally for student diversity. With over 20,905 students and 3,278 full-time faculty members, and a campus covering more than 100 city blocks, UAB ranks in the top 20 public universities for federal research funding and is the major research and teaching university in Alabama. Interdisciplinary scholarship and teaching are prominent. We seek candidates pursuing cutting-edge research in areas that include, but are not limited to, materials physics under extreme environments, such as low-temperature, high-field, or high-pressure quantum phenomena; static and dynamic compression; synchrotron-based diffraction and spectroscopy for materials characterization; or additive manufacturing of advanced materials. This position aligns with federal and national priorities in energy resilience, quantum technologies, advanced manufacturing, and national security, providing fertile ground for extramural funding and impactful partnerships. The application materials must include: (i) 1-2-page letter clearly explaining the applicant's qualifications and interests relevant to this position, (ii) full curriculum vitae, iii) plans to setup a nationally competitive research program in the physics department at UAB, (iv) 1-2-page description of teaching and student mentoring interests, and (v) list of at least three contacts for references. All completed applications will be given full consideration until position is filled.
