About The Position

The College of Natural Resources (CNR) has a full-time (9-month), tenure-track, academic-year teaching position available in the Fisheries and Water Resources Discipline. The position will be focused on teaching, advising, and mentoring undergraduate students in the Fisheries and Water Resources Discipline. The successful applicant will be expected to teach courses mainly to support the Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences option, which has approximately 130 students each year. Potential courses include Techniques in Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences, Fisheries Management, Fisheries Research, and a team-taught introductory course in Fisheries, Forestry, and Wildlife. There is the potential to teach other courses in the candidate’s area of expertise. The teaching load for full-time faculty is equivalent to 12 credits per semester. Teaching at least three weeks during the summer with the College’s Summer Field Experience (at the Treehaven Field Station or elsewhere) or participating in the International Field Experiences in Natural Resources Management for additional compensation is required. Faculty members are expected to accomplish a record of scholarly achievement in their field of interest to complement teaching responsibilities and contribute to college, university, and/or professional service needs. Opportunities exist for involvement in research (undergraduate and graduate), outreach, and international programs to meet the University scholarship and service requirements. Experience in and a desire to work with various student learning experiences and backgrounds are expected. Full position description is available upon request. Department: The Fisheries and Water Resources Discipline is in the College of Natural Resources at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (www.uwsp.edu/cnr/). It has approximately 1,585 undergraduates, 50 graduate students, and over 120 faculty and staff. The Fisheries and Water Resources Discipline is currently home to the Wisconsin Cooperative Fishery Research Unit (USGS), the Aquatic Biomonitoring Laboratory, the Center for Watershed Science and Education, and several joint research efforts with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, including the Fisheries Analysis Center. The College supports premier undergraduate natural resource programs with disciplines in Fisheries and Water Resources, Forestry, Environment and Society, Soil and Waste Resources, Wildlife Ecology, and the Department of Paper Science and Chemical Engineering.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in Fisheries or a closely related field or will have an earned Ph.D. prior to the start date (August 24, 2026 or negotiable).
  • Strong field skills including the ability to operate field equipment necessary for teaching and research in aquatic resource management including but not limited to active and passive fish capture and general fish identification and handling skills.
  • A wide variety of fisheries-specific expertise and skills will be considered, but all successful applicants are expected to have strong quantitative skills and extensive field-based experience and expertise including but not limited to active and passive fish capture and general fish identification and handling skills.

  • Demonstrated excellence in undergraduate teaching, including working with students in field applications, and conducting applied fisheries and aquatic sciences research including obtaining extramural funding.
  • Demonstrated mentoring of undergraduate students in research and/or career development.
  • Can add peripheral skills to our program such as public relations and communications, enhanced data analysis, or spatial analysis.
  • Collaborative teamwork experience across private, federal, state, municipal, and tribal agencies is desirable.
  • Ability to conduct applied fisheries and aquatic sciences research as demonstrated by: Successful publication record. Obtaining extramural funding.
