About The Position

At the undergraduate level the emphasis is on recruitment, career exploration, and introducing top performing students to MDC.

Requirements

  • Must maintain a current, valid driver's license.
  • Undergraduate student at an accredited university/college in good standing. Students who will be graduating before the internship begins are not eligible.
  • Ability to develop and sustain cooperative working relationships.
  • Work outside in adverse weather conditions and perform tasks requiring strenuous physical activity.
  • Move about grounds, both inside and outside of buildings.
  • Demonstrate regular and predictable attendance.
  • Ability to keep accurate records of supplies and services.
  • Ability to keep detailed and accurate records.
  • Ability to proficiently operate a computer and other office equipment.
  • Ability to work Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays when needed.
  • Ability to keep an accurate record of supplies, services and time reports.
  • Work is typically performed in a standard office environment; occasionally required to work in outdoor environments.
  • May be exposed to loud noises which may require the use of hearing protection.
  • Ability to travel within Missouri and stay overnight frequently during the summer.
  • Ability to bend and twist in use of force situations
  • Ability to regularly lift 5 pounds, correctly lift up to 25 pounds.
  • Constantly operate a computer and other office machinery.
  • Work Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays as needed.
  • Ability to navigate in a variety of environments including woodlands, steep terrain, wetlands, caves, and uneven terrain
  • Clarity of vision and ability to distinguish colors.

Nice To Haves

  • Cumulative GPA of 2.8 or higher on 4.0 scale is desirable.
  • Preference will be given to students who have completed at least 45 credit hours.

Responsibilities

  • Operate/learn to operate truck and trailer combinations, backing trailers, launching boats and piloting outboard and jet motorboats on open water and rivers.
  • Operate/learn to operate all terrain and utility terrain vehicles, chainsaws, and equipment used in land and aquatic management activities.
  • Learn to utilize sonar and GPS mapping for identifying fish habitat and areas to target or avoid for fisheries surveys.
  • Assist with large scale fish monitoring projects using electrofishing, seines, trawling, netting and traps.
  • Process fish structures for aging and calculating fish condition indices relative to fish age.
  • Work with a team of diverse staff to improve fish habitat in reservoirs and streams managed by MDC.
  • Learn to use digital field data collection for fisheries (Fins 2.0 tablets).
  • Work with Science branch in monitoring rare and endangered species and species fo special management concern.
  • Shadow and assist with a variety of resource management initiatives on MDC Conservation Areas and on private land, including but not limited to the potential for timber inventory, invasives eradication, prescribed fire, public education programs, private land visits, etc.
  • Collaborate with specific working groups to advance/improve fisheries management.
  • Other duties as assigned.
