About The Position

The Department of Visual Arts at Brock University invites applications for a 3-year, Instructional Limited Term Appointment (ILTA) in Drawing and Extended Practice at the rank of Assistant Professor, beginning July 1, 2026, subject to final budgetary approval. The workload of an ILTA member shall normally be 80% teaching, 20% research and/or service. This position has a 4.0 full credit teaching load or equivalent. Studio courses are typically 0.5 (half-credit). The successful candidate will be expected to teach 8 half-credit courses a year at the undergraduate level, with most of their teaching load focused in the discipline of drawing.

Requirements

  • The Department is seeking an artist/educator whose pedagogical expertise and studio practice is firmly rooted within the discipline of drawing, which may include experimental, and hybrid approaches relevant to contemporary practice and the future of the field.
  • The candidate will have an active creative research practice, as well as a demonstrated record of exemplary teaching at the post-secondary level.
  • Applicants should hold an MFA or equivalent and a minimum of two years post-secondary teaching experience relevant to the position.
  • The successful candidate will have teaching interests rooted in the discipline of drawing; demonstrated experience teaching a range of materials, techniques, and approaches in drawing (traditional to contemporary), including but not limited to observational, representational, expressive, conceptual, non-objective, process-based approaches; and the ability to extend the discourse of drawing through experimental, hybrid, or other approaches relevant to contemporary practice and the future of the field.
  • Applicants should clearly articulate their experience and capacity to teach discipline-specific studio methodologies and approaches in drawing, as well as expanded practices relevant to the future of the field.
  • Their teaching record should illustrate broad thinking, innovative, inclusive, and accessible teaching methods and approaches, as well as the ability to incorporate art history, visual culture, discourse and critical theory into their teaching.

  • The ability to teach in another area of studio practice would be considered an asset.
  • The ideal candidate will also have the capacity to bring critical theory, global contexts, diverse cultural perspective and intersectional approaches to bear on their pedagogy.
