About The Position

Rocky Mountain College of Art + Design is looking for an Assistant Professor + Art Education Placement Coordinator for the Art Education degree program. The coordinator serves the Chair and the Program Lead of the Art Education Department working closely with faculty and students. The coordinator manages all operational, compliance, and partnership aspects of field experiences and student teaching. This role ensures candidates are placed in compliant, high-quality educational settings and that all documentation meets state and institutional requirements. The coordinator works closely with academic leadership with a focus on improving student learning and success, supporting faculty, and performing duties as assigned by the Chair and the Program Lead. The Art Education program at Rocky Mountain College of Art + Design prepares future PK–12 art educators through an integrated approach to studio practice, pedagogy, and professional preparation. Faculty demonstrate expertise in art education curriculum design, standards-aligned assessment, and the creation of inclusive, student-centered learning environments across online, hybrid, and studio-based formats. Instruction is grounded in culturally responsive pedagogy, Universal Design for Learning, and critical engagement with visual culture and contemporary art practices. Faculty support teacher preparation through mentorship, supervision of field experiences, and alignment of coursework with licensure and accreditation standards, while remaining actively engaged in creative practice, scholarship, and professional leadership in art education.

Requirements

  • Masters Degree in Art Education, or a closely related field.
  • University teaching experience
  • Minimum of 3 years professional experience in K–12 education, teacher preparation, or field supervision.
  • Knowledge of teacher licensure standards and accreditation processes.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and data-tracking skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Terminal Degree, MFA, EdD, PhD (ABD considered), or equivalent, in art education, education, or a related discipline.
  • A track record of research and/or creative practice in one or more of the following: curriculum design, assessment, learning environments, critical issues in art education, equity in learning, methods in art education, philosophy of art education, psychology and learner development, K-12 studio practices.
  • University-level teaching experience and Interdisciplinary fluency; the ability to mentor students across grade level and educational contexts.
  • Evidence of a current, dynamic professional practice and engagement in the field through exhibitions, publications, or similar endeavors.

Responsibilities

  • Teaching + Instruction: Teach a minimum of 1 class totaling between 12-20 students within each 8-week term for 5 terms. Courses taught in this role are in the Art Education Department that they are serving, while also working with faculty across the RMCAD academic community to support broader curricular and co-curricular initiatives.
  • Field Placement Coordination: Coordinate all art education practicum and student teaching placements (local and national). Maintain relationships with districts, mentor teachers, and partner organizations. Manage background checks, fingerprinting, and licensure compliance. Coordinate mentor teacher contracts, stipends, and documentation. Track clinical hours, evaluations, and licensure paperwork. Maintain accurate placement databases and reports. Coordinate mentor onboarding and orientation. Maintain mentor resources (handbooks, websites, communication tools). Collect and organize mentor feedback.
  • Service to the Department: Support the Institutional Mission, Vision, and Value Statements, the Diversity Statement and Diversity within the Curriculum Statements, and the Department Mission Participate in program reviews, academic assessment, and/or course development as needed. Attend college events, meetings, and training sessions as determined by the Department Chair Engage with community organizations and associations that further and promote RMCAD
  • Mentorship: Responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of student teaching and observation placements within the art education department. Orient and train the members of the faculty, staff, mentors, students and the greater RMCAD community on the procedures specific to RMCAD student teaching and observational placements. Mentor and assist art education students working within assigned placements.
  • Scholarship + Creative Work: Contribute discipline-based, interdisciplinary, and multidisciplinary scholarship that advances knowledge and learning by producing new ideas and understandings (examples can include but are not limited to peer-reviewed articles, creative work, texts, chapters, and presentations). Produce and exhibit creative works
