About The Position

Brookside Charter School is a tuition-free public charter school serving Pre-K through 8th-grade students in Kansas City Public School (KCPS) boundaries. The Assistant Principal supports the principal by overseeing daily school operations, supervising staff and students, enforcing policies, and helping ensure a safe, effective learning environment. The Assistant Principal is responsible for the organization, operation, and management of the Summer School program. Requirements

  • Requires a master’s degree in Secondary Education, Educational Administration, or a closely-related field.
  • Proficiency in Google Workspace, Microsoft Office and/or equivalent software.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of how school operations and administration support instruction.
  • Make sure school procedures are clearly understood and implemented serve a single purpose – to support pursuit of student academic outcomes.
  • Be self-reflective, as well as fair and respectful of others.
  • Be adept at giving affirming and adjusting feedback fairly and respectfully.
  • Accept feedback from the Board, Superintendent, Principal, teachers, school staff, and others in the same spirit of cooperation and shared responsibility for future outcomes.

Nice To Haves

  • Missouri Administrative certification is preferred.
  • Experience teaching in an urban school environment preferred.
  • Experience teaching historically underserved populations (or historically marginalized populations) with a record of positive academic improvement is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Support the implementation of school-wide systems and routines that promote a safe, orderly, and welcoming learning environment.
  • Collaborate with the Principal and leadership team to develop and implement strategic goals aligned with the school’s mission and values.
  • Assist with staff coaching, professional development, and support around classroom management and student engagement.
  • Serve as a visible and engaged leader throughout the school day, including arrival, dismissal, lunch, and transition periods.
  • Serves as an administrator overseeing the planning and implementation of summer school
  • Serves as a liaison between families, schools, courts, community agencies, and other organizations to assist families facing poverty or homelessness
  • Refers clients to community resources for needed services
  • Develops connections with community businesses and organizations
  • Maintains case history records and prepares reports
  • Designs and oversees opportunities for involving parents, guardians, and volunteers in the life of the school and establish a forum for publicizing ways that parents/volunteers can be involved in the school
  • Facilitates Parent Teacher Action Team (PTAC)
  • Supervises the social workers
  • Monitors school-wide attendance and assists with initiating programs that will decrease absenteeism and tardiness
  • Leads the school attendance team
  • Attends Truancy court
  • Consults with parents, teachers, and other school personnel to determine causes of problems such as truancy and to implement solutions
  • Acts as a liaison authorized to affirm whether children and youth meet the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) definition of homelessness, to qualify them for HUD homeless assistance programs.
  • Interprets laws relating to homeless students; and ensures the delivery of mandated services.
  • Assesses students identified as homeless and makes visits to living areas/shelters to assess the family environment.
  • Collaborates with school staff to develop interventions for students identified as homeless and develops individualized service plans.
  • Serves as a liaison between schools and such agencies/facilities as homeless shelters, social services, court services, and the police department to coordinate assistance for homeless students.
  • Acts as a resource to administrators, guidance counselors, teachers, and health services personnel regarding homeless students, interpretation of homeless/school attendance policies and laws, and record-keeping requirements.
  • Conducts training to school staff on school laws as it relates to the homeless student population; and recommends strategies for supporting the needs of these students.
  • Maintains necessary records ensuring confidentiality of students and their families and prepares related reports.
  • Refers homeless families and students to housing services, in addition to other services.
  • Ensures that Brookside Charter complies with and meets all deadlines associated with state, federal, and sponsor reporting and statutory requirements.
  • Develops and maintains a productive and positive relationship with Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education staff.
  • Ensures the lawful use of all Brookside Charter funds.
