About The Position

The Department of Child Development, Literacy and Special Education Department in the Reich College of Education at Appalachian State University seeks qualified candidates to fill a tenure-track position at the Assistant or Associate Professor level in the Literacy Education program. We are seeking applicants who have expertise in teaching and an active research agenda focused on elementary reading/literacy to join our collaborative team. The successful applicant will be appointed to a full-time, nine-month position to begin August 2026 with the possibility of summer teaching.

Requirements

  • Evidence of at least two years of experience with university teaching at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels in reading/literacy content
  • Evidence of at least one peer-reviewed publication related to reading/literacy
  • Evidence of at least two years of teaching pK-6 reading/literacy teaching experience in linguistically and culturally diverse educational settings (or identify documented equivalent in your letter of interest)
  • Earned doctorate in reading/literacy education or closely related field by July 31, 2026 ( ABD will be considered for the first year of this position with a reduction in rank and salary. See details below.)

Responsibilities

  • Engage in work consistent with Appalachian State University’s Strategic Plan 2022-2027
  • Teach elementary literacy undergraduate methods courses with field-based practica at the Boone and Hickory campus sites and connected school-based sites
  • Teach literacy education graduate courses at campus sites and online
  • Teach, mentor, and collaborate with preservice teacher candidates, in-service teachers, and doctoral students
  • Actively engage in scholarly work
  • Actively engage with teachers and students in our laboratory school and clinical settings ( Academy at Middle Fork ; Lucy Brock Child Development Lab , Anderson Reading Clinic ) and/or other field-based sites
  • Maintain a visible presence on campus
  • Engage in service to the program, department, college, university, and profession
  • Collaborate with colleagues in the program, department, and university
  • Serve on and chair doctoral committees
  • Advise graduate students
