About The Position

The assistant cross country coach works under the direction of the head coach and is responsible in assisting in administrative and organizational aspects of the given sport program within the Mission of the University and its Philosophy of Intercollegiate Athletics. The assistant coach is also responsible for recruitment of student-athletes, adherence to NCAA, Conference and University regulations with regard to recruiting, admission standards and eligibility, monitoring student-athlete academic progress, and assisting in the scheduling of athletic practices and contests.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • At least 1 year of related experience required, preferably in an assisting coaching position
  • Understanding of NCAA rules and regulations required.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with members of the University community, San Diego community and all media.
  • Possess good management skills.
  • Represent the University in a professional and responsible manner; excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Adherence to and appreciation for NCAA/conference/league regulations and ability to instill those values in subordinates and students.
  • Excellent skills in the use of specific equipment and tools as identified below.
  • California driver’s license required within 6 weeks of employment, Class B license preferred
  • Required to be certified to recruit off-campus by USD Athletics Compliance Staff via NCAA rules education training within 6 weeks of employment, and then each year before August 1st.
  • Heartsaver CPR /AED / First Aid certification required. Must have this certificate within 6 weeks of employment.
  • Must be able to travel for extended periods of time for athletic and fundraising events.
  • Background check: Successful completion of a pre-employment background check.
  • Degree Verification Requirement : Persons offered employment in this position will be required to provide official education transcripts for degree verification purposes.

Responsibilities

  • Coaching Supervision of all student athletes of men’s and women’s cross country and women’s track in a coordinated and planned program of practices and competition, with a concern for the players’ health and welfare, physical and psychological preparation.
  • Practice Preparation – Coordinates with the Head Coach to provide daily practice schedules for all aspects of the specified program.
  • Responsibility for teaching and coaching all specified aspects of the overall program.
  • Travels with Team to practices and meets
  • Assist in Preparing and organize a competitive schedule for approval by the sport supervisor and Director of Athletics. Consideration should be given to the academic life of student-athletes, i.e. missed class time, examination periods and other factors that would adversely affect their academic success
  • Provide spring competition opportunities, as well as spring and summer training workouts for individual team members.
  • Knowledge of and adherence to all University, NCAA and Conference Rules and Regulations, Policies and Procedures with special attention to recruiting, eligibility, admissions and financial aid
  • Make recommendations to the head coach on potential recruits
  • Phone conversations with prospects
  • Work directly with the USD admissions liaison and director of compliance in an effective and efficient manner.
  • Assist with official and unofficial visits
  • Assist in securing home race course sites, permits, event staff with assistance from athletic facilities staff.
  • Determine practice site locations and course trails.
  • Arrange transportation to and from practice and competition sites.
