About The Position

The Assistant Meat Manager supports the Meat Manager in overseeing daily operations of the meat department to ensure high standards of product quality, freshness, food safety, inventory control, and customer service. This role assists with department execution, associate supervision, and operational compliance while helping drive sales and control shrink. Requirements

  • Previous experience in a meat department or grocery retail environment
  • Knowledge of meat cutting, handling, and food safety practices
  • Strong customer service and communication skills
  • Ability to lift up to 60 lbs and perform repetitive physical tasks
  • Ability to work in refrigerated environments

Nice To Haves

  • Prior supervisory or lead experience
  • Familiarity with inventory control, shrink management, and ordering systems

Responsibilities

  • Maintain a friendly, service‑oriented department with fast and courteous customer assistance
  • Assist customers with product selection, special orders, and food preparation suggestions
  • Address customer questions or concerns and escalate issues as needed
  • Assist with daily meat department operations including cutting, trimming, grinding, wrapping, and merchandising
  • Build and maintain meat and seafood displays; rotate and remove damaged or outdated product
  • Ensure cleanliness, sanitation, and organization of work areas, cutting rooms, coolers, equipment, and displays
  • Support opening and closing department procedures
  • Ensure proper temperature control during preparation, storage, and display
  • Enforce food safety, sanitation, labeling, and code‑dating standards
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and company meat handling regulations
  • Assist with inventory control to maintain adequate product levels, quality, and freshness
  • Help minimize shrink through proper handling, rotation, trim control, and waste reduction
  • Assist with physical inventories conducted every four weeks
  • Maintain an organized meat cooler and backroom area
  • Support execution of promotional and seasonal meat and seafood displays
  • Ensure accurate pricing and signage, including Country of Origin Labeling (COOL)
  • Assist with monitoring sales trends and daily production needs
  • Assist with scheduling, training, supervising, and assigning duties to meat department associates
  • Lead the department during assigned shifts in the absence of the Meat Manager
  • Coach associates on safety, productivity, and customer service expectations
  • Accurately complete daily logs, production charts, meat grinding logs, sales, labor, and other required paperwork
  • Perform receiving duties including breaking down loads, verifying invoices, inspecting quality, reporting shortages, and stocking product
  • Operate department equipment including pallet jacks, hand trucks, knives, grinders, saws, cubers, and safety tools
