About The Position

Animal Care Centers of NYC has a goal that is simple and powerful; we strive to help end animal homelessness in NYC. ACC's robust volunteer program has over 500 dedicated volunteers who work in varying roles from walking dogs and playing with cats to assisting with vaccine clinics to appearing in public at community events and activations. We are looking for an Assistant Program Manager to support, strengthen, and help grow this flourishing program.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED required.
  • At least 1 year of experience within an active volunteer program, animal shelter, or related field required.
  • Experience running large scale volunteer programs.
  • Ability to employ humane handling techniques whenever possible.
  • Must be able to lift a minimum of 50lbs.

  • Supervisory experience is a plus.
  • Ability to work flexible hours and days, including nights and weekends, as needed.
  • Ability to interact with animals in a calm and non-threatening manner.
  • Demonstrated collaborative, team-oriented work style with potential for leadership growth.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, interpersonal and interview skills to successfully recruit and train volunteers.
  • Working knowledge of Excel, PowerPoint, and Microsoft applications, plus ability to learn new computer programs.
  • Ability to support budget planning and operate within established budget parameters.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Volunteer Program Manager in developing and maintaining volunteer training programs.
  • Help maintain the ACC Volunteer Orientation Program, including policies and procedures, rules and regulations, and other necessary information. Assisting with orientations and onboarding with Care Center Coordinators.
  • Support the recruitment and scheduling of volunteers for off-site outreach events including stand-alone tabling, mobile adoptions and community pets clinics/pantries.
  • Collaborate with other departments, under the direction of the Volunteer Program Manager, to optimize the value of volunteers.
  • Assist in developing, organizing, and hosting volunteer recognition and appreciation efforts.
  • Contribute to the creation and publication of newsletters and program reports regarding volunteer program activities.
  • Assist in and have active participation around program implementation goals and measurements.
  • Help build and maintain relationships with ACC partner organizations including schools, corporate groups, and work programs which will help grow ACC’s Community Kids and Corporate Volunteer Programs, which have a volunteer component to their initiatives.
  • Support the Volunteer Program Manager in supervising Volunteer Supervisors, Coordinators and Assistants, including providing training, resources, and ongoing feedback on work performance.
  • Assist in monitoring safety issues among volunteers and take immediate corrective action as needed, including proper training or re-classifying levels of competency to handle animals.
  • Help develop and foster a supportive working relationship between ACC staff and volunteers, including assisting with conflict resolution.
  • Assist in recruiting, training, placing, supervising, and retaining volunteers and interns for the continuation and growth of the volunteer program.
  • Assist with completing weekly timecards for direct reports as directed.
  • Support time-off approvals and coverage organization in coordination with the Volunteer Program Manager.
  • Maintain accurate volunteer records, including applications, database files, and statistics on all volunteers and interns.
  • Assist in compiling and preparing departmental reports and program data as requested by the Volunteer Program Manager or Senior Manager, Public Engagement.
  • Fear Free certification within 30 days of hire.
  • Complete other duties as assigned by supervisor.
