About The Position

Under general supervision, the Assistant Electrician performs electrical tasks and maintenance of campus housing and administrative building electrical equipment and minor repairs. This role also includes routine inspections of campus equipment and required documentation. Joining the Facility Services team, the Assistant Electrician will be responsible for installing, maintaining, modifying, and repairing all electrical wiring, control, and lighting systems and associated electrical equipment. The position requires compliance with state and local building regulations along with the current National Electric Code. Responsibilities include inspecting and testing components of electrical systems, conducting and maintaining records from routine inspections, and using hand and power tools. The Assistant Electrician will also run computer cables, connect computer jacks and plugs, and test for adequate operation. They will utilize blueprints, wiring diagrams, and manufacturer's installation manuals to complete assigned projects, and complete all work requests, documenting time, materials, and a detailed description of work. The role requires working collaboratively and professionally with all co-workers and members of the campus community, observing all safety regulations, and wearing protective gear. As of August 1, 2025, the ability to provide own hand tools is required. The normal work week is forty (40) hours, Monday-Friday, with a 30-minute unpaid lunch, but the ability to work extended hours and weekends to respond to emergencies and meet deadlines is required. The position may also require periodically responding to campus emergencies during off-hours and is considered essential personnel/responder. A valid New York State driver's license is required. Other duties may include assisting with buildings and grounds, snow removal maintenance, etc., as assigned by the supervisor.

Requirements

  • High school diploma/GED required
  • Minimum of two (2) years' experience working in the electrical trade
  • Self-motivated, able to identify work needing to be done and address it or if unable to address bring to supervisor's attention
  • Excellent hand-eye coordination
  • Demonstrable knowledge and skills for electrical installation, maintenance and repair of electrical systems and equipment
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills
  • Computer Skills
  • Ability to lift and carry up to fifty pounds on a regular basis and up to sixty pounds on an occasional basis
  • Ability to perform movements such as standing, sitting, stooping, kneeling, bending, crouching, climbing ladders, walking, carrying
  • Ability to provide own hand tools for the purposes of completing assigned work (as of 8/1/2025)
  • Ability to work extended hours and weekends to respond to emergencies and meet deadlines
  • Ability to periodically respond to campus emergencies during off hours
  • Valid New York State driver's license that satisfies both university and insurance company underwriting rules and regulations for driving a university motor vehicle
