About The Position

Reporting to the System Director of Strategic Analytics the Assistant Director Revenue Cycle Systems and Analytics role will be pivotal to Stony Brook Medicine as we consolidate and upgrade our Patient Billing Platforms across the Health System in the coming years. The Assistant Director will be the Principal Subject Matter Expert on our new Oracle Health Patient Accounting System (OHPAC / Soarian) and will be the Primary Project and Strategy Leader as we roll-out and optimize the system at Stony Brook University Hospital, Stony Brook Southampton Hospital and Eastern Long Island Hospital and the physician enterprise. In addition, the Assistant Director will also play a critical, collaborative technical role as we develop and evolve Corporate Strategic Analytics (Cost Accounting, Feasibility Studies and Business Plan Development).

Requirements

  • B.S. Accounting, Finance, Health Information Management, Computer Science or related field.
  • Minimum ten years’ experience in healthcare revenue cycle, finance, information technology or decision support for an Inpatient Acute Care Facility or Health System with 3 or more years in a Supervisory role.
  • Expert knowledge of Oracle Health Patient Accounting or Soarian Financials including implementing and configuring, troubleshooting and resolving systems issues for an Acute Care Hospital or Health System.
  • 5+ years’ experience in planning, leading, directing and managing projects.
  • 5+ year experience analyzing healthcare reimbursement and facility claims (Including: DRG, APC, APG, Managed Care Contracts, UB-04, 837i, 835).
  • Experience implementing Patient Accounting systems.
  • Strong proficiency with SQL.
  • Expert understanding of CPT, HCPCs and ICD-10 coding principles.
  • Advanced MS Office experience including relational database experience may include Power Pivot or Power Query.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s Degree or Professional Licensure.
  • Experience implementing GL, Decision Support or Cost Accounting solutions.
  • Programming experience with VBA, EMUE and/or other Scripting, Automation tools, languages.
  • Experience with Robotic Process Automation for Revenue Cycle (RPA) implementation (UI Path or similar).
  • Experience reporting from healthcare decision support, patient accounting, contract management and/or claims scrubber systems.
  • Experience utilizing SAP Business Objects, Crystal Reports.
  • Experience utilizing visualization software (Tableau, MS Power BI, etc.).
  • Proficient utilizing MS SQL Server Management Studio to write queries, create tables, views and write stored procedures.
  • Proficient utilizing MS Visual Studio to create and maintain SSIS packages.
  • Analytics Programming experience including; R and/or Python.

Responsibilities

  • The position will lead the teams responsible for configuring, maintaining and reporting from the Hospital’s Business Office Systems.
  • Principally responsible for developing and executing Business Office systems and reporting strategy.
  • Direct the implementation, maintenance and ongoing optimization and upgrade of all of the Departments ‘owned’ applications and databases and will work collaboratively with I.T. Revenue Cycle where systems responsibility is shared.
  • Lead in the development of all dashboards, reports, reconciliations and worklists which support operations, internal audit efforts, regulatory compliance and performance improvement initiatives.
  • Lead in identifying operational opportunities, quantify the scope and financial magnitude of such issues and opportunities and develop KPI’s and/or Benchmarks which ensure financial opportunities, remediation efforts and/or go-forward workflow re-engineering and throughput are optimized. Regularly partner with Revenue Cycle leaders, Stony Brook Information Technology. and Vendors in developing, executing and monitoring Revenue Cycle initiatives.
  • Responsible for operational reporting, reconciliations and analysis intended to drive data-informed decisions and optimize business outcomes including, but not limited to the following departmental functions and/or systems: o Accounts Receivable Management (Oracle Health Patient Accounting (Soarian), Invision Patient Accounting and Contract Management; Optum Payment Integrity Compass, MS SQL Server) - service line, payer and aging level A/R trending and analysis, identification of “at-risk” receivables, over/underpayment trends and analysis, and claims follow up productivity (quantitative and qualitative). o Claims and Denials Management including reconciliation of billing volumes, clean claims rates, detailed edit and error reporting, claims error root cause analysis, claim error resolution timeframes, payer electronic claim acceptance/error rates, denials tracking, and appeals outcomes. o Cash Management and Cash Position. o Bad Debt, Charity Care, Financial Assistance including write-offs, recoveries and assistance granted. o Staff productivity and Operational Workflows.
  • Candidates must possess a high degree of technical skill and significant prior experience in implementing and maintaining revenue cycle systems and providing revenue cycle decision support. Soarian/OHPAC knowledge is required.
