About The Position

UT Southwestern is actively seeking an Assistant Director of Veterinary Care for our Animal Resource Center team. As an Assistant Director, you will work under minimal supervision to assist the Director in operation of the veterinary care program at UT Southwestern; includes leading and mentoring animal care staff, ensure facilities are maintained, consult with researchers on protocols and humane care, provide technical support and training, and may contribute to administrative duties and instruction. This role requires a DVM degree and expertise in laboratory animal medicine, facility management, and regulatory compliance.

Requirements

  • DVM or VMD degree from Accredited Veterinarian Medical Association school and
  • Completion of two (2) or three (3) year postdoctoral training program in laboratory animal medicine
  • 5 years related veterinary experience
  • Current license to practice veterinary medicine in the United States and
  • (ACLAM) AM COL LAB ANIMAL MED DIPLOMA

Responsibilities

  • Develops and implements veterinary care program policies and procedures. Recommends changes and reviews progress with the Director.
  • Provides oversight of veterinary care of research animals.
  • Provides medical and surgical care for research animals.
  • Oversees the interviewing, hiring, training and mentoring of management/supervisors of veterinary care staff. Participates in interviewing and hiring staff. Reviews employee performance, makes recommendations for promotions, and reviews disciplinary actions.
  • Maintains compliance for AAALAC accreditation of animal care program (ARC SOPs, IACUC policy, the Guide, AWA, NIH guidelines, USDA, CDC, PHS policy, etc.).
  • Assists with AAALAC site visits and USDA inspections.
  • Oversees subordinate veterinarians/veterinary technicians within the veterinary care team.
  • Assists Director with creating and analyzing various reports and projects.
  • Maintains confidentiality as appropriate.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
