About The Position

Children’s Home Society of South Dakota is seeking a Assistant Director of Residential Treatment supports the Residential Program in overseeing the daily operations and clinical aspects of the residential treatment program at Children’s Home Society. This role ensures the delivery of high-quality, trauma-informed care to youth residents and assists in maintaining compliance with all regulatory requirements. The Assistant Director serves as a key leadership team member, providing direct supervision to staff, supporting the implementation of individualized treatment plans, and helping foster a safe, therapeutic, and structured environment for clients and staff. Requirements

  • Master’s degree in behavioral or social sciences area with two years of relevant alternative childcare experience or a Bachelor’s degree in behavioral or social sciences with four years of relevant alternative childcare experience.
  • Valid driver's license preferred
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee must be able to physically restrain a child in ways taught by the Agency while being able to verbally communicate to the child and other staff.
  • The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Must successfully complete all required background and pre-employment checks EEO/AA.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in managing the daily operations of the residential treatment program in alignment with CHS's mission and applicable regulations.
  • Support the development and implementation of therapeutic programming and resident routines.
  • Supervise residential team leads and direct care staff in collaboration with the VP of Psychiatric Residential Treatment.
  • Provide coaching, mentorship, and performance feedback to ensure high-quality, trauma-informed care.
  • Coordinate and/or deliver staff training and ensure compliance with required competencies.
  • Support recruitment, onboarding, and retention efforts.
  • Participate in treatment team meetings and support the development and monitoring of individualized treatment plans.
  • Assist with behavioral oversight, including monitoring interventions, de-escalation strategies, and crisis responses.
  • Conduct routine observations and walkthroughs to ensure treatment, integrity and positive milieu management.
  • Monitor documentation for accuracy and timeliness, including incident reports, daily logs, and treatment updates.
  • Assist in preparation for audits and ensure adherence to licensing, accreditation, and funding requirements.
  • Support continuous quality improvement initiatives and maintain data tracking as assigned.
  • Act as a liaison between frontline staff and leadership, facilitating effective communication and problem-solving.
  • Collaborate with clinical, educational, and medical staff to ensure continuity and coordination of care.
  • Participate in meetings with families, agencies, and community partners as needed.
  • Respond promptly to crises, providing leadership in behavioral escalations and emergencies.
  • Support implementation and ongoing improvement of safety protocols and emergency procedures.
  • Ensure staff are trained and proficient in crisis prevention and intervention techniques (e.g., SCM or equivalent).
