About The Position

The Assistant Director of Residential Services is responsible for providing managerial and operational oversight of assigned Individualized Residential Alternatives (IRA) home(s) or Intermediate Care Facility (ICF) unit(s) serving adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. This leadership role ensures that individuals receive high-quality, person-centered care aligned with their unique needs, preference, and goals. Operating withing the regulatory frameworks of OPWDD, DOH, CARF, and The Jewish Board’s standards. The Assistant Director oversees all aspects of the assigned residences/units. This includes supervising Residence Managers, maintaining regulatory compliance, fostering a culture of accountability, compassion, and excellence, and providing direct coverage in the absence of Residence Managers. The Assistant Director plays a key role in interdisciplinary coordination, staff development, and overseeing the delivery of services. As a mentor and resource to residential teams, the Assistant Director ensures that programming, documentation, and service delivery consistently meet both regulatory and organizational expectations.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required with 10 years of experience in Intellectual/Developmental Disabilities including 5 years in a supervisory or managerial role.
  • Bachelor’s degree with 5 years of experience in Intellectual/Developmental Disabilities including 2 years in a supervisory or managerial role.
  • Knowledge of Department of Health (DOH) and/or OPWDD regulatory requirements required.
  • Ability to effectively supervise, support, coach and train staff.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience in exercising good judgment and problem solving against multiple priorities.
  • Ability to analyze problems and determine corrective measures.
  • Ability to develop positive working relationships and collaborate across all departments.
  • Strong computer skills are required, including proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook); comfortable and proficient using audio video platforms (i.e., Zoom, Teams), Electronic Health Records (EHR) applications.
  • The knowledge or ability to learn software programs and use of data and trends to inform clinical practice.
  • This position entails lifting clients using a mechanical device, positioning clients, pushing clients in wheelchairs, and transferring clients physically where prescribed.
  • Ability to travel daily and walk around program sites, including stairs.
  • Ability to sit at a computer for up to 75% of the day, at times.

Nice To Haves

  • Valid NYS Driver’s License preferred.
  • SCIP-R, CPR, AMAP trained and certified preferred.
  • Familiarity with Orthodox Jewish practices preferred; commitment to learn required.

Responsibilities

  • Residential Operations & Oversight
  • Manage and support day-to-day operations of multiple IRA or ICF residences.
  • Ensure smooth and efficient operations: scheduling, budgeting, supply management.
  • Conduct daily site visits to residential programs to observe and evaluate services.
  • Ensure oversight of vehicles and physical plant maintenance (cleanliness, safety, emergency response, preventative maintenance)
  • Monitor health and medical needs and report concerns.
  • Monitor finances of individuals (PNA Legers, Money Management Assessments, expenditures).
  • Review fire drill reports and recommended updates to Fire Evacuation Plans.
  • Coordinate with Managers to support individuals’ daily living, leisure, and community integration.
  • Manage program master schedules and ensure adequate coverage.
  • Regulatory Compliance & Quality Assurance
  • Ensure compliance with State and Federal regulations (OPWDD, DOH, etc.).
  • Conduct regular quality assurance checks and audits.
  • Participate in internal audits and licensing inspections and address deficiencies.
  • Ensure timely notifications and completion of all incident reporting and documentation.
  • Ensure program documentation and billable records are accurate and timely.
  • Participate in OPWDD/DOH/IAC training.
  • Staff Management & Development
  • Supervise and support Residence Managers and assigned staff.
  • Hire, train, evaluate, and provide performance feedback to staff.
  • Conduct team meetings, 1:1 supervision, and ongoing training.
  • Lead, couch, and support Residence Mangers in program initiatives and individual support.
  • Responsible for training Direct Support Staff and Residence Managers.
  • Complete performance evaluations and ensure follow-up on recommendations.
  • Provide on-call support to staff during crisis/emergency calls.
  • Interdisciplinary Team Coordination
  • Coordinate interdisciplinary team processes (clinical, nursing, residential).
  • Coordinate all program elements (ISPs, IPPs, behavior plans)
  • Work in tandem with:
  • Nurse/LPN’s for medical care and order implementation.
  • BIS for behavior plans and clinical protocols.
  • Facilities for maintenance and facility issues.
  • Attend and contribute to interdisciplinary team meetings.
  • Person-Centered & Family Engagement
  • Develop and implement strategies to improve quality of life using a person-centered approach.
  • Engage with individuals and their families regularly to ensure satisfaction with services and to address any concerns proactively.
  • Manager relationships with families, guardians, and advocates.
  • Administrative & Strategic Responsibilities
  • Provide reports and documentation to the Director of Residential Services.
  • Assist in developing and implementing new systems, policies, and procedures.
  • Participate in department meetings and planning.
  • Participate in intake and screening processes.
  • Be available for after-hours on-call responsibilities.
  • Other duties as assigned.
