About The Position

The School of Law has an outstanding opportunity for an Assistant Director of Professional Development to join their team. POSITION PURPOSE The Assistant Director of Private Sector & Data is a key contributor to the UW School of Law (UW Law)’s Center for Career Development. The Director is responsible for programs enabling private sector hiring, such as On Campus Interviewing (OCI); advancing external engagement models to deliver law firm and corporate law student career opportunities; developing external relationships through programmatic efforts delivering law firm and corporate support for fellowship programs; and 1:1 student career counseling, professional development, and academic advising. The role works holistically with external and internal stakeholders and students to deliver customized advice, strategy, and support during law school, as graduates enter the work force, and in subsequent career transitions. This position reports to the Executive Director, Office of Private Sector & Judiciary, Center for Career Development. This position provides key support to ensure that students have a positive experience at UW Law and as they seek to enter the legal profession. This requires a comprehensive understanding of legal education and the legal market. The Center for Career Development works closely with members of the law school community, including faculty, staff, students, and alumni, to develop, support, and coordinate student-focused activities that contribute to the Office’s mission. In turn, this role’s focus on external engagement requires the ability to build and maintain successful relationships with law firms, corporate and in-house stakeholders.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • A minimum of 6 years of experience in any of the following: law firm, public agency, non-profit organization, educational institution, professional recruiting, or functional equivalent.
  • Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
  • Knowledge of legal industry hiring and professionalism standards and practices
  • Demonstrated ability to forge new – and cultivate existing – relationships with law firms, corporate legal professionals, and/or public interest organizations.
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills, interpersonal skills, and presentation skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work with diverse communities
  • Ability and willingness to adjust to changing priorities on very short notice as well as the ability to manage multiple projects with varying deadlines
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate across organizational boundaries
  • Strong computer skills including but not limited to the Microsoft Office Suite of applications
  • Must have the ability to maintain confidentiality and use discretion.

  • A combination of 4 years of experience in higher education and/or as a practicing attorney.
  • Prior experience in compiling and synthesizing law school alumni career information to deliver accurate and fulsome statistical reporting, including knowledge of and proficiency with 12Twenty and NALP and ABA employment reporting requirements.
  • Aggregating data in the manner and methods required by the NALP Employment Report and Salary Survey and ABA Employment Protocols; expertise in U.S. News and World Report statistical reporting and data collection.
  • Demonstrated experience collaborating with external and internal stakeholders, students, and alumni, including Career Development team members, on data collection.
  • Strong professional network within the legal community
  • Experience with program management, developing communications and marketing materials, event management and budgeting
  • Prior experience working one-to-one or one-to-few with law students and alumni
  • Familiarity with the administrative structure of a large university, facilitation and/or teaching experience

Responsibilities

  • Private Sector Hiring Programs (30%): Own and deliver a strategic plan for all law firm hiring programs, with particular emphasis on modern models for On Campus Interviewing (OCI); develop or update repeatable processes and handbooks documenting program design and execution and annual budget aligned to each. Collaborate with the Gates Public Service Law team to incorporate or expand OCI to public interest programs and employers. Plan and host annual UW Law all student career fair(s) and similar hiring events, including identification and invitation to employers, marketing and communications, event management, student engagement, among others. Develop and deliver student learning materials, events and presentations to drive awareness and understanding of private sector hiring pathways, tools to succeed in private sector job placements, and opportunities available. Partner with the other departments and UW Law leaders in developing student focused activities. Support the mission, strategic goals and core values of the Center for Career Development and UW Law.
  • Data & Technology (20%): Lead the annual compilation and execution of the NALP Employment Report and Salary Survey and ABA Employment Protocols under the direction of the Associate Dean and Executive Director, Private Sector & Judiciary, including: Gather and synthesize alumni (and student, as needed) career statistics aligned to the requirements of NALP Employment Report and Salary Survey and ABA Employment Protocols. Develop and execute the Center for Career Development project management plan by entering data, assess existing data, identify information gaps, and request needed outstanding data from internal stakeholders. Collaborate within the Center for Career Development team and 12Twenty representatives to access and upload / validate data including compiling the NALP Employment Report and Salary Survey and ABA Employment Protocols using 12Twenty and any supporting materials, as needed. Assist in reporting out results to internal stakeholders. Serve as the point of contact for all data vendor relationships, including 12Twenty. Advance the Center for Career Development’s data insights through accurate and timely collection of student data (as assigned), and the proficient and regular use of 12Twenty and other technology tools. Collaborate with the Director of Academic Success, Dean of Admissions, Registrar, and Dean of Student Life on projects that combine or cross-analyze data and trends to support the student experience from admission to post-graduation.
  • External Relations (10%): Support the Associate Dean and Executive Director in external engagement across the main stakeholder communities, including law firms and corporate employers. Provide cross-team support and information to enable the WH Gates Public Service Law Program and Private Sector & Judiciary teams to maintain and deepen external relationships needed to advance key fellowship programs. Identify and cultivate relationships with new stakeholders using research and fundraising strategies to drive additional employer engagement, open new pathways for student and alumni career opportunities, and access additional fellowship donors. Partner across the Law School, including with Admissions, Student Affairs, Academic Success, to gain an understanding of student career goals and work to educate external stakeholders on collective student and alumni capabilities and career aspirations. Nurture campus, community, and other partnerships that help UW Law strengthen its impact and visibility, in the community and support UW Law’s mission and goals.
  • Programming/Professional Student Advising (30%): Provide coaching and advising to students. Partner with faculty, staff, students, alumni, and members of the community to foster collaborations and initiatives for JD and graduate students. Foster and support career and professional development opportunities for students in collaboration with faculty, staff and the community. In collaboration with CCD team members, faculty, staff, alumni, and external stakeholders, identify and promote opportunities for student engagement in the legal community such as bar activities, alumni events, and/or community service that contribute to their professional development.
  • Other Duties (10%): Collaborate with - and report on efforts to - internal stakeholders, including the Associate Dean, Center for Career Development, the Dean of the Law School, and other functions enabling student development and growth. Perform other related duties as necessary.
