About The Position

The Academic Coach is a 12-month grant funded position dedicated to supporting students in the Jefferson Undergraduate Certificate in Medical Billing and Coding who are funded through the Philadelphia Works Vocational Skills grant. The Academic Coach will assist with interviewing prospective students and providing individualized academic support and mentorship to students. This role is essential in helping students navigate a rigorous curriculum, strengthen study skills, and persist through challenges to successfully complete the program and prepare for certification and employment. The coach will collaborate closely with faculty, program administrators, and student services to ensure comprehensive support for the learners throughout their educational journey.

Requirements

  • Strong knowledge of medical terminology and human body, pathophysiology, pharmacology, medical coding systems, reimbursement methodologies, industry-standard coding software, leading healthcare technologies, and healthcare terminology
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills for coaching and documenting
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree preferred
  • Experience: At least 2 years of experience advising, coaching, or teaching medical coding students in an academic setting
  • At least 2 years of experience developing or revising medical coding curricula
  • Current medical coding industry certification required.

Responsibilities

  • Develops an individual Academic Success Plan for each student at the start of the program
  • Provides weekly one-on-one coaching sessions
  • Provides tutoring to ensure students understand course content
  • Tracks student attendance, academic performance, and engagement
  • Identifies at-risk students and implements intervention strategies to improve retention and student success
  • Develops and delivers a preparatory course for AAPC’s CPC certification exam
  • Assists with data collection and reporting to Philadelphia Works
  • Assists with recruitment activities and with interviewing prospective students
  • Redesigns the courses to meet the needs of the grant-funded initiative
  • Serves as a member of the ad-hoc Student Retention Committee
