About The Position

USS is a rapidly growing logistics and infrastructure services platform focused on the refurbishment, deployment, and management of shipping container assets and related intermodal equipment. The business operates in a highly operational environment with multiple facilities and a large base of physical assets. As the company scales, USS is strengthening its finance organization to support a more disciplined reporting environment and the operational complexity of a growing multi-location platform, investing in financial infrastructure while maintaining an entrepreneurial speed and flexibility. The Assistant Controller will work closely with the Controller and CFO to strengthen the company's accounting function and support the financial infrastructure needed to scale the business. This role will help establish reporting discipline, systems integrity, and accounting processes for a larger platform. Operating within a small, hands-on finance team, the role requires balancing execution with process improvement, focusing on improving the close process, ensuring accurate and reliable financial reporting, and strengthening accounting systems integrity. This position is well-suited for a technically strong accountant who enjoys building structure in an evolving environment, supervising a small accounting team, establishing stronger workflows, documentation standards, and financial processes, and partnering with operational leaders to ensure financial reporting reflects business activity.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance required.
  • 6 to 10 years of progressive accounting experience with strong technical accounting and financial reporting capability.
  • Experience operating in a smaller or scaling company where systems and processes are still evolving.
  • Hands on experience managing close processes and preparing GAAP financial statements.
  • Experience working with accounting systems such as QuickBooks or similar platforms.
  • Prior experience supervising or mentoring accounting staff.

Responsibilities

  • Support the Controller in managing the monthly and quarterly close processes.
  • Improve the speed, reliability, and documentation of the close over time.
  • Ensure financial statements are accurate and prepared in accordance with GAAP.
  • Maintain the integrity of financial data across the company's accounting environment.
  • Optimize the use of QuickBooks or similar accounting systems to support reliable reporting.
  • Identify opportunities to streamline manual accounting processes and improve financial visibility.
  • Work closely with operational leaders to ensure financial information accurately reflects activity across the business.
  • Translate operational data into clear financial reporting that management can rely on.
  • Partner with sales and customer service teams to optimize billing and cash collections cycles, internal controls and accounting discipline.
  • Support the development of consistent accounting policies and financial processes.
  • Ensure the organization maintains strong documentation and audit readiness as the company grows.
