About The Position

This position will work in Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) with duties that encompass all missions of OHSU (Oregon Health & Sciences University). EHS oversees/manages programs and policies aimed at minimizing safety, health, environmental, and regulatory risks to the OHSU community. EHS encompasses chemical, biosafety, fire/life safety, radiation safety, as well as general safety oversight across the university. Projects and/or responsibilities in other Facilities Program areas may also be assigned.

Requirements

Bachelor's degree.
5 years of related experience.
Working knowledge of local, state, and Federal radiation safety regulations.
Working knowledge of CMS/accreditation body requirements (e.g., DNV-GL).
Ability to work with radioactive materials used in a clinical setting.
Ability to communicate effectively with regulators and a wide variety of audiences in the clinical setting.
Skilled in the use of radiation measuring devices.
Excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills.
Experience responding to a variety of incidents, questions, and exercises on an on-call and after-hours basis.

Nice To Haves

Experience in radiation safety in a clinical setting.
Experience in an Academic Medical Center.
Extensive knowledge of local, state, and Federal radiation safety regulations.
Specific knowledge of policies and programs and applicability to this institution.
Current applicable/related certification.

Responsibilities

Review, collaborate, and implement regulatory requirements, polices, and procedures.
Participate in Clinical Radiation Safety Committee meetings and activities.
Participate in Laser Safety Committee meetings and activities.
As needed, coordinate review of incidents, data, and initiatives through QMS committee structure. Collaborate with stakeholders, as necessary. Escalating through the Radiation Safety Officer when needed.
Assist with the evaluation, selection, use, storage, and disposal of radioactive materials in the clinical environment.
Assist with radioactive waste disposal processes in OHSU Healthcare.
Facilitate and participate in preparation and execution for regulatory inspections and audits, including those from accreditation bodies, state agencies, and voluntary programs. Participate in development of plans of correction.
Coordinate review of human research protocols, provide guidance to the institution in developing review processes, and work with IRB (Institutional Review Board) and researchers to resolve any identified issues.
Assess new clinical uses of radiation and, if necessary, develop safety procedures according to the existing risks and regulations.
Participate in management of the dosimetry program, including determining use, tracking, trending, reporting, training development, and escalation of issues.
Participate in all phases of emergency management and advise on procedures for radioactive exposures.
Consider new equipment and advise on appropriate physical environment parameters and design for safe use.
Provide training and advice for the safe use of radiation sources. Track clinical training through approved channels (e.g., LMS/Compass).
Participate in emergency management exercises.
Evaluate custom training requests to determine criticality and appropriateness, design, develop, and deploy training as required in coordination with Radiation Safety team members.
Assist in patient procedures, as needed, and in other radiation safety focused areas (e.g., medical physics functions).
Assist with and make measurements of radiation exposure levels to specific x-ray machines.
Assist with the investigation and response to any adverse incidents or near misses with a clinical radiation safety component.
Prepare reports, gather data, respond to information requests, attend meetings and relevant task forces, and ensure follow-up actions are completed.
Draft, update, and review policies and procedures that may be associated with Clinical Radiation Safety topics.
Participate in an emerging leadership role within EHS.
Manage inventories of x-ray producing machines, shielding studies, and other equipment.
