About The Position

The Department of Speech-Language-Hearing Sciences (SLHS) at Loyola University Maryland is seeking applications for a 12-month, on-site, four-fifths (30 hours per week) Assistant Clinical Professor to serve as Externship Director (ED), starting August 16, 2026. This role includes an adjusted teaching load of two courses to accommodate the responsibilities of the Externship Director. The ED is responsible for overseeing a comprehensive externship program that supports the clinical training and professional development of graduate students in speech-language pathology. This involves securing and maintaining clinical partnerships, ensuring appropriate off-campus placements that meet program requirements and ASHA certification standards, and advising students for their placements. The ED also provides ongoing oversight and support to students and preceptors throughout their externship experiences, including communication, performance monitoring, evaluations, and addressing challenges. Additionally, the ED evaluates externship sites and preceptors for quality and effectiveness, uses data for program improvement, ensures compliance with accreditation and university requirements, tracks student clinical competencies, and contributes to departmental reporting. As a member of the Graduate Director Team, the ED supports student assessment, recruitment, and program operations, and serves on departmental committees.

Requirements

  • A Master’s degree or degree in Speech-Language Pathology from an accredited program
  • Current Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC-SLP) from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA)
  • Eligibility for MD state licensure to practice speech-language pathology
  • Minimum of 3 years’ full-time (or its equivalent) clinical experience as a practicing speech-language pathologist
  • Completion of a minimum of 2 hours of professional development in the area of supervision/clinical instruction as noted in ASHA’s Professional Development Requirements for the 2020 Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology Certification Standards
  • Evidence of the knowledge and skills outlined by ASHA necessary for effective clinical supervision
  • Combination of leadership, administrative, and academic expertise to support the program's success
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to contribute to the Jesuit educational mission of the department and university

Nice To Haves

  • Prior successful academic or clinical teaching experience at the graduate and/or undergraduate levels
  • Prior clinical supervision experience
  • Familiarity with accreditation standards (e.g., CAA, ASHA) and clinical education best practices

Responsibilities
