About The Position

The City of Lawrence is seeking a motivated Assistant City Attorney. This person will play a valuable role in offering legal advice and support to elected officials and City staff, including members of the Police Department and the Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical Department. The work of the Assistant City Attorney focuses on legal matters pertaining to general municipal law, constitutional law, criminal law and procedure, open records law, and contract law.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school
  • Two years of municipal legal experience or equivalent
  • Law license in good standing in Kansas
  • Strong legal research skills
  • Oral and written communication skills
  • Analytical skills
  • Ability to manage various assignments in a dynamic environment
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Pass the background check and post-offer physical and drug screen
  • Resume, cover letter, and a writing sample of a legal document are required for consideration.

Responsibilities

  • Drafting ordinances
