About The Position

The City of Lawrence is seeking a motivated Assistant City Attorney. This person will play a valuable role in offering legal advice and support to elected officials and City staff, including members of the Police Department and the Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical Department.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school
  • Two years of municipal legal experience or equivalent
  • Law license in good standing in Kansas
  • Strong legal research skills
  • Oral and written communication skills
  • Analytical skills
  • Ability to manage various assignments in a dynamic environment
  • Resume, cover letter, and a writing sample of a legal document are required for consideration
  • Must possess, or have the ability to obtain, a valid driver’s license
  • The successful candidate must also pass the background check and post-offer physical and drug screen

Responsibilities

  • Drafting ordinances
  • Conducting legal and policy research
  • Preparing legal memoranda
  • Providing training to City staff on legal matters
  • Monitoring and addressing recent developments in law
  • Representing the City in court
  • Being available to respond to officers' calls outside of regular business hours
  • Attending evening meetings as required
  • Focuses on legal matters pertaining to general municipal law, constitutional law, criminal law and procedure, open records law, and contract law.
