The Dallas Morning News is seeking an Assistant Breaking News Editor to provide editing support and leadership across the team, infusing urgency, immediacy and creativity. This editor will prepare stories for publication on multiple platforms, demonstrating an understanding of audiences. This journalist will collaborate with fellow editors on the team to help plan and package breaking and trending stories that engage and serve our North Texas audience and help optimize all content. A strong candidate will be a talented communicator, collaborator and multitasker, and have robust editing skills along with an understanding of and ambition for accountability journalism. This editor must be well-organized and be a bridge-builder in creating relationships. This editor must have strong news judgment, a keen sense of urgency and immediacy and be ready to lead reporters in tense, fast-moving situations. They'll also need to be adept at making smart decisions as news develops quickly. This manager will directly manage reporters. Our team of breaking reporters has covered it all from tragic events that have held our city and country rapt to severe winter weather that has paralyzed North Texas to daily trending stories on topics ranging from Mark Cuban to SpaceX to Dolly Parton. If you love leading journalists through rapidly evolving breaking news stories in the 24-hour digital news cycle or helping them identify and explore interesting and noteworthy cultural, social or local trends, we want you to talk to you. This team strives to lead in our region when news breaks, with an emphasis on smart and insightful coverage that readers can't get anywhere else. We want to be swift, authoritative and thorough - not just first but sticking with stories that evolve over days and weeks. Our breaking and trending team supports the entire newsroom by helping swarm big news events and breaking news across beats. You would have the opportunity to shepherd some people-driven enterprise stories off breaking news events and help reporters dig into important topics in a state that has no shortage of news. An understanding of and an interest in audience behavior and newsroom analytics is important.
