About The Position

In this recreation management position, you assist with managing the successful operation of three Galveston Island East End Parks: Stewart Beach, East Beach and the East End Lagoon Nature Preserve. Alongside the Beach Parks Manager, you ensure standards of excellence for park operations with emphasis on daily park operations, including customer service, facilities and park grounds upkeep, staffing, special events, capital improvement execution, budgetary oversight, and special projects. Provide hands-on assistance to meet operational standards. Working with the Coastal Zone Management Department, you ensure the beachfront is maintained properly and all trash and recycling are collected. You assist with all aspects of park operations, including supply orders, cash reconciliation, credit card transactions, and annual passes. In addition, you note any facility or mechanical issues and either correct them or notify the appropriate department or vendor to ensure they are dealt with in a timely manner. You provide direct supervision to personnel, including hiring, counseling, coaching, and training. You develop park staffing schedules, and working directly with the payroll clerk, you assist employees with any pay discrepancies. Using a hands-on leadership style, you routinely review employees' work and provide constructive feedback for improvement. Your management skills are valuable as you assist in developing and managing the parks budget and capital improvement plan, develop and lead a preventive maintenance program for the parks, and work with contract labor and internal and external resources during special events. You operate company vehicles and equipment including heavy machinery when needed while abiding by safety precautions. Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • At least 18 years of age
  • At least three years experience in manual or skilled labor
  • At least three years customer service experience with excellent customer service skills
  • At least one year leadership experience, or demonstrated strengths as a standout leader among coworkers
  • Understanding of general finance and budgeting
  • Facility operations experience, with an eye for preventive maintenance
  • Certified Tourism Ambassador (CTA) certification or ability to become certified (CTA training provided by the Galveston Island Park Board of Trustees upon hire)
  • Fluent in English both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to operate a passenger vehicle and all-terrain vehicle
  • Experience backing trailers and operating heavy and light machinery safely and efficiently
  • Basic computer and data entry skills
  • Excellent customer service skills

  • A degree in parks and recreation management or a related field is preferred.
