About The Position

The City of Edgewater is seeking an outdoor-loving, part-time Recreation Assistant to work in our park system. Edgewater is a city of approximately 5,000 residents nestled between the cities of Denver, Wheat Ridge, and Lakewood. The primary responsibility of the Recreation Assistant - Parks is to perform a wide variety of semi-skilled duties in the maintenance, upkeep and repair of City parks, ball fields, and landscaped areas. This position must work well independently and with teams, while providing excellent customer service to residents and visitors. Hiring range is $21.89 - $22.98/Hr. This position will work 0 - 29 hours per week between the hours of 7am – 6pm, Wednesday-Saturday. Candidates with flexible schedules are desired as the workflow varies to provide proper coverage and meet business needs. This position has a seasonal schedule and will have regularly scheduled hours April - October. After October the hours will be reduced between November – March however candidates may have the opportunity to cross train in other areas of Parks and Recreation. Successful candidates will be eligible to resume working regular parks hours in April 2027.

Requirements

  • Basic verbal and written English language skills and grammar to reasonably communicate information with the public and/or complete relevant written documentation required by job activities.
  • Excellent communication, customer service and problem-solving skills.
  • The ability to perform multiple functions at once and the ability to handle the public in a friendly and professional manner.
  • Must have legal authorization to work in the United States of America.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license with the ability to safely operate a motor vehicle, provide proof of a safe driving record, and maintain a safe driving record.
  • Submit and pass a pre-employment background check.
  • Must be at least sixteen (16) years of age.
  • Must possess or be able to obtain First Aid, CPR and AED Certification.

Nice To Haves

  • Parks maintenance experience, preferred.
  • Spanish language skills preferred.
  • Proficiency with various hand-powered tools and motorized equipment, preferred.
  • Outstanding customer service and interpersonal communication skills, to maintain effective working relationships with citizens, elected officials, appointing authorities, department heads, appointed boards, employees, and volunteers.
  • Ability to work independently.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains and cleans restrooms and shelters, empties trash.
  • Performs unskilled maintenance tasks including, but not limited to, picking up trash, painting, and graffiti removal.
  • Prepares and marks sport fields for youth soccer, youth baseball and adult softball.
  • Performs daily facility checks and logs and informs Parks and Grounds Supervisor of maintenance issues.
  • Performs pre and post rental walkthroughs to check for damage.
  • Operates park maintenance equipment such as mowers, edgers and blowers; maintains hand tools and assigned equipment.
  • Rakes leaves and clears debris from walks, fields, courts, and other facilities.
  • Plants, waters, and maintains landscaped areas consisting of bushes, trees, flowers, shrubs, and lawns.
  • Trims and prunes bushes, trees, and shrubs as necessary.
  • Assists Parks and Grounds Supervisor with maintenance and repair to the City's irrigation systems as needed.
  • Inspects playgrounds for trash or safety issues.
  • Identifies equipment needs for each assigned project.
  • Utilizes proper safety precautions and PPE related to work performed.
  • Performs snow removal duties as needed.
  • Answers inquiries related to parks and recreation and directs guests appropriately.
  • Addresses guest complaints and filters them to the Parks and Grounds Supervisor.
  • Follows established guidelines concerning facility operations such as use policies and emergency procedures.
  • Keeps work areas tidy.
  • Communicates effectively and efficiently with Parks and Grounds Supervisor.
  • Maintains security of facilities. Reports vandalism and theft.
  • Maintains a positive attitude, takes initiative, and works as a cohesive team with all staff members to ensure efficiency and camaraderie.
  • Responds to accidents or incidents according to procedures. Effectively handles emergency situations involving fire alarms, CPR and First Aid.
  • Upholds City and department policies and procedures as well as applicable laws.
  • Participates in staff meetings and ongoing training opportunities.
  • Maintains regular and punctual attendance.
  • Any other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Parks and Grounds Supervisor.
