About The Position

DEFINITION To plan, supervise, assign and review the work of staff responsible for the maintenance of levee system, airport, cemeteries, parks, aquatic center and golf course; to oversee and participate in all work activities; and to perform a variety of technical tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility; and to provide highly responsible and complex technical support to the Parks Director. SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED Receives direction from the Superintendent of Parks or Director of Public Works. Exercises general and immediate supervision over supervisory, technical and maintenance staff. ESSENTIAL AND MARGINAL FUNCTION STATEMENTS--Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: Essential Functions: Plan, prioritize, assign, supervise and review the work of staff responsible for Parks Department activities. Estimate time, material and equipment needed to perform assigned maintenance activities; maintain accurate records of maintenance repairs and services. Assist with the development and implementation of Parks Department goals, objectives, policies and priorities for each assigned service area. Coordinate and direct a variety of projects related to Parks Department activities. Assist with selection, training, motivation and evaluation of Parks Department personnel; provide or coordinate staff training; work with employees to correct deficiencies; recommend discipline procedures. Operate a variety of mechanical equipment including a mowers, weed eaters, excavators, power tools and hand tools. Provide staff assistance to the Parks Director; assist with preparation of staff reports and other necessary correspondence. Prepare analytical and statistical reports on operations and activities; process daily work orders. Utilize proper safety precautions related to all work supervised and performed. Respond to and resolve difficult and sensitive citizen inquiries and complaints. Marginal Functions: Attend and participate in professional group meetings; stay abreast of new trends and innovations in the fields of airports, cemeteries, parks, aquatics and golf. Respond to emergencies and natural disasters as needed; determine needs and expedite a solution. Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

  • Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities which may include the following: -- walking, standing or sitting for extended periods of time -- lifting and/or carrying heavy objects -- performing manual labor -- traveling to various work locations -- climbing ladders to work on signs or equipment -- bending, stooping and kneeling for extended periods of time.
  • Maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for: -- making observations -- communicating with others -- reading and writing -- evaluating status of vehicles and equipment -- operating assigned equipment and vehicles -- answering questions -- speaking in a clear and audible voice -- supervising crew members -- traveling to various work locations -- evaluating the performance of mechanical and electrical machinery and hand tools -- monitoring assigned activities and operations.
  • Maintain mental capacity which permits: -- making sound decisions and using good judgment -- communicating clearly -- responding to questions -- training crew members -- estimating time and materials needed for projects -- prioritizing and assigning work activities.
  • Effectively handle a work environment and conditions which involve: -- working closely with others -- field and office work -- working with hazardous chemicals and materials -- exposure to dirt and dust -- working under harsh weather conditions -- high level of noise -- potentially dangerous equipment and machinery.
  • Three years of increasingly responsible related work experience, including three years supervisory responsibility.
  • Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid Kansas commercial driver's license.
