About The Position

The Luteman, also known as an Asphalt Raker, is an hourly-rated skilled craft position responsible for assisting with the application of asphalt on highways, private roadways, parking lots, and driveways using hand tools. This position supports the paving crew in ensuring asphalt is properly spread, compacted, and finished according to project specifications. The Luteman must work closely with other crew members and follow instructions from the crew foreman to complete tasks efficiently, maintain quality standards, and meet production schedules. This role requires a strong “safety first” mindset, physical stamina, and the ability to adapt to a fast-paced work environment.

Requirements

  • One to three (1-3) years of industry-related experience in asphalt paving or a related construction trade (emphasis on paving).
  • Ability to follow work directions, communicate effectively with supervisors and coworkers, and understand job site procedures.
  • Dependable, strong work ethic, and willingness to learn and adapt to job requirements.
  • Ability to work extended hours, nights, weekends, and overtime when required.
  • Must comply with company drug and alcohol testing requirements.
  • Demonstrates professionalism, adaptability, problem-solving skills, and a positive attitude.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with asphalt mix behavior, compaction processes, and paving techniques.
  • Knowledge of proper grade, slope, and surface finishing.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team in a fast-paced and physically demanding environment.
  • Basic understanding of traffic control and job site safety protocols.

Responsibilities

  • Spread, rake, and level asphalt material to achieve the proper thickness, slope, and grade.
  • Use hand tools (rakes, lutes, shovels, tampers) to smooth and compact material at edges, joints, or difficult-to-reach areas.
  • Ensure that asphalt adheres properly to the road surface and that transitions between sections are seamless.
  • Monitor asphalt temperature and consistency during placement to maintain quality and prevent premature cooling.
  • Prepare surfaces for paving by cleaning debris, applying tack coat, or adjusting existing road features.
  • Assist in installing or removing screed extensions, strike-off plates, and paving electronics under the guidance of the Screed Operator.
  • Perform minor adjustments to achieve proper slope and cross-grade when necessary.
  • Work closely with the Screed Operator, Paver Operator, and other crew members to maintain production schedules.
  • Assist other crew members temporarily as needed to ensure work is completed efficiently.
  • Communicate clearly with crew members about material flow, adjustments, and safety concerns.
  • Follow all company safety procedures, traffic control guidelines, and OSHA regulations.
  • Wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times.
  • Observe surrounding equipment, traffic, and other hazards to prevent accidents.
  • Participate in daily safety meetings, toolbox talks, and job site briefings.
  • Operate hand tools and small machinery safely and efficiently.
  • Assist with minor maintenance of hand tools, screed extensions, and paving equipment.
  • Ensure proper storage and organization of tools and materials at the end of the shift.
  • Perform general cleanup of the worksite to maintain safety and efficiency.
  • Maintain a professional, courteous attitude toward co-workers, supervisors, and the public.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned to support production, quality, and safety objectives.
