About The Position

The State Archives serves as the central depository for government records of permanent value. Its holdings date from Maryland's founding in 1634, and include colonial and state executive, legislative, and judicial records; county probate, land, and court records; church records; business records; state publications and reports; and special collections of private papers, maps, photographs, and newspapers. The Archives' Summer Internship Program provides opportunities for students interested in the fields of archives, records management, conservation, preservation, public safety, library studies, history, information management, and museum studies to gain valuable experience in the field through hands-on participation in actual development projects that will be used in the day-to-day fulfillment of the Archives’ core functions of preservation and access. This position is an educational learning opportunity for Maryland students within a program that has been provided by the Archives for over forty years. The position is a ten week internship for undergraduate college and graduate school students to get hands-on experience and on-the-job training in the fields of archives, records management, conservation, preservation, public safety, library studies, history, information management, and museum studies. Each student receives a staff mentor and works directly alongside professional archival staff members contributing to the core pillars of the Archives' mission: preservation and access. Students provide customer service by answering reference questions in person in the Archives' public research room and via mail and email; learning document preservation techniques in our conservation lab; maintaining the electronic archives; cataloging and handling documents, art, and artifacts; and providing contextual interpretation through research of our collections. These Maryland students receive a substantial educational benefit, and in return, the State receives 10 weeks of enthusiastic assistance with core duties of the Archives.
