About The Position

The Architectural Director of Major Projects provides leadership and strategic oversight for the planning and design of major capital construction and renovation projects across the university campus. This position directs the Major Projects team within Facilities Planning and Design and manages external architectural and engineering consulting partners to ensure that campus facilities support the university’s academic mission, institutional values, and long-term campus development goals. The Director ensures projects are planned and designed according to institutional standards, regulatory requirements, and budget constraints while maintaining high architectural and environmental quality. This individual serves as a key liaison between university leadership, campus stakeholders, regulatory agencies, and project consultants throughout the planning and design phases of major capital projects.

Requirements

  • A firm commitment to the mission of BYU
  • Professional Architecture degree with Ten to fifteen years’ experience as a licensed architect.
  • Strong working knowledge of structural, electrical, mechanical and civil engineering necessary to communicate and coordinate with architects, engineers, special consultants and contractors.
  • Knowledge of construction methods, technology and systems necessary to ensure projects are planned in an effective and economical manner.
  • In depth knowledge of architectural design standards, building codes, permit review process, and other regulations relating to planning and construction.
  • Ability to balance design excellence with cost, schedule, and institutional priorities while managing multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to meet with and communicate effectively with clients, university officials, city officials, etc.
  • Ability to direct the activities of the Major Projects team and to resolve personnel and other problems related to the team or projects.
  • Ensure that the level of training of all personnel is commensurate with their job description.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in architecture
  • Fifteen plus years’ experience as a licensed architect
  • Experience in higher education facilities planning, design and construction.

Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership and direction to the Major Projects planning and design team within Facilities Planning and Design Department.
  • Ensure effective allocation of staff resources across multiple concurrent projects.
  • Be actively engaged in early project discussions/development and long-term outlook for the University’s major project initiatives and ensure project(s) align with the university’s core mission values and objectives as well as campus development strategies.
  • Assist in the development of proposed building programs for administrative approval and use by external architects and engineers.
  • Lead the process in selection of architectural and engineering consultants for BYU major projects and review and negotiate proposed fee structures.
  • Direct the planning process and consultant activities including project meetings, design reviews, specification conformance, site tours and other coordination activities.
  • Oversee the preparation of construction cost summaries and project feasibility for active and upcoming major projects.
  • Assist the BYU Construction Department with Construction Administration activities until project completion.
  • Submit project budgets for review and approval by others and monitor them through the planning stage.
  • Review proposal requests and change orders affecting project budgets.
  • Approve department requisitions.
  • Ensure that projects are completed on time, within budget, and according to BYU standards, specifications and policies and meet local and state building codes.
  • Oversee and coordinate revisions and additions to the campus construction specifications.
  • Ensure good public relations and maintain good working relations with all consultants, city officials, and off-campus contacts working with the Planning department.
  • Adhere to university standards and policies.
