You will be responsible for overseeing the daily aquatic operations and facilities maintenance for Story Land Park & Living Shores Aquarium. You will oversee and manage the routine, preventative, and responding maintenance of all life support systems, aquatic exhibits, and water treatment processes. You will work across departments to ensure aquatic exhibits are presentable and guest-ready, required equipment and tools are available or purchased, and the aquatic collection is adequately maintained from a life support standpoint. We are currently looking for a: Aquatics & Aquarium Facilities Supervisor Roles & Responsibilities:

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant field, 3 or more years working in an aquarium, zoo or similar facility with aquatic systems and life support
  • Physical aspects include walking and being on your feet most of the working day, climbing ladders, bending, crouching, and lifting up to 50lbs
  • Working knowledge of life support equipment including pumps, media filters, protein skimmers, UV sterilization, ozone generators and PVC plumbing
  • Ability to troubleshoot and problem solve in a fast-paced environment in both proactive measurements and in response to emergencies
  • Clear communication, both written and verbal, between staff across aquarium departments, leadership team members, and outside contractors
  • Knowledge in water quality parameters and testing methods, troubleshooting fish health concerns, and maintaining functional exhibits
  • Flexible scheduling with availability on some holidays & weekends and able to respond to emergencies

Responsibilities

  • Manage the maintenance of all life support systems including: backwashing media filters, cleaning pump baskets, maintaining pump seals & gaskets, repairing minor plumbing problems, troubleshooting protein skimmers, servicing heating and chilling units, replacing UV bulbs and quartz sleeves, and monitoring ozone units
  • Oversee the facility operations including HVAC units, lighting, restrooms, and contracting for services as needed in collaboration with Aquarium Director for budgeting logistics
  • Train and delegate aquatic tasks to animal care staff, coordinate large scale maintenance projects with feedings, fish moving and exhibit cleaning
  • Work with Aquarium Director in spearheading and managing an internal dive program in accordance with OSHA regulations and ordinances, assist in the maintenance of equipment including regulators, air compressor & weight belts
  • Oversee the operations of life support cleanliness, aquatic quarantine holding systems, and supply storage areas; keep inventory of equipment and supplies including a spare parts list for large-scale plumbing parts, pumps, valves and meters
  • Monitor and maintain the Sensaphone sentinel monitoring system in all large exhibits, ability to respond and coordinate coverage to emergencies as needed in collaboration with Aquarium Director
  • Maintain safety practices in accordance with company policies when working in and around the aquarium, such as, large water systems, heights/ladders, electrical outlets, and confined spaces
  • Attend regular meetings with animal care staff and Aquarium Director to discuss fish health concerns, life support upgrades & improvements, and water quality testing on a weekly basis
  • Assist in curating living collection of aquatic life in relation to aquarium exhibits, the animals’ specific needs in adequate welfare, and enhancing the guest experience in coordination with Aquarium Director & Animal Care Coordinator
  • Oversee the salt use in saltwater making, maintain evaporator equipment and saltwater disposal, and coordinate septic system clearing & maintenance
  • Manage the function of the water park facility and oversee the seasonal staff in maintaining pumps, filtration, chemicals, and troubleshooting problems as they occur during the summer operational season
  • Manage the opening and closing of the seasonal water park facility in spring and winter, draining water, moving dynamic fixtures and properly sealing permanent structures when season concludes in collaboration with Maintenance & Operations Team
