About The Position

The N.C. Department of Information Technology (NCDIT) serves as the Technology Center for the State of NC. Services that NCDIT provides reach a client base of state and local government agencies, as well as schools, colleges and universities. We currently have an opening for a GIS System Engineer This position may be eligible for hybrid remote work in accordance with state policy and the agency’s remote work program but does require weekly onsite work The Early Career Associate Program is ideal for recent graduates, early-career professionals, or those looking to transition to a new career seeking broad exposure to state IT operations. The Early Career Associate Program is a two-year on-the-job training (OJT) program designed for individuals with three years or less of professional experience. After gaining exposure to the role through the development process, participants will have the opportunity to be placed in a permanent role based on mutual fit and career goals. The primary purpose of the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Unit is to provide GIS services, direct all GIS based application systems development, reports, server/system architecture, and GIS system maintenance for the NCDOT infrastructure.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or an IT related field from an appropriately accredited institution, OR Associate degree in computer science or an IT related field or related technical degree from an appropriately accredited institution and one year of experience in business application consulting or development OR High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and four years of experience in business application consulting or development; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of enterprise GIS architecture, software, and implementation
  • Knowledge of change and release management policies and vulnerability assessment processes
  • Ability to work independently on tasks using Standard Operating Procedures and other guidelines

Responsibilities

  • The GIS System Engineer participates in the day-to-day maintenance of the enterprise GIS server environment, which is comprised of more than 270 servers.
  • Implementation and testing of OS and Software Patching
  • Scripting automated deployments using languages like PowerShell
  • Deployment and configuration of applications
  • Development and maintenance of CI/CD Pipelines
  • Participating in status meetings and incident reporting
