About The Position

Under the supervision of the Animal Control Director, is responsible for the care and well-being of the animals at the shelter, including but not limited to providing vaccinations, assisting with pre- and post-surgical care, and evaluating animals for potential adoptions. Provides customer service to visitors, potential adopters, and responds to complaints regarding animals and animal bites.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED and one year of experience caring for animals including performing vaccinations, euthanasia and assisting in surgeries.
  • The County, at its discretion, may consider an alternative combination of formal education and work experience.
  • Certified to perform euthanasia and rabies testing.
  • Michigan Vehicle Operator's License.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of shelter animal care and kennel care and cleanliness.
  • Knowledge of sanitary procedures and practices, animal behavior, observing and caring for animals, performing vaccinations and humane euthanasia, and pre and post-surgical care of animals.
  • Skill in effectively communicating ideas and concepts orally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships and use good judgment, initiative and resourcefulness when dealing with County employees, contractors to the County, representatives of other governmental units, professional contacts, elected officials, and the public.
  • Ability to assess situations, solve problems, work effectively under stress, within deadlines, and in emergency situations.
  • Skill in the use of office equipment and technology, including Microsoft Suite applications and ability to learn software used by animal control.
  • Skill in the use of specialized medical equipment including, but not limited to, anesthesia machines, pulse oximeters, and other equipment as needed.
  • Ability to attend to duties scheduled at times other than normal business hours.
