About The Position

San Diego Humane Society is hiring a full-time Animal Services Supervisor for our El Cajon Animal Services team! In this role, you’ll be responsible for coordinating oversight of campus animal services programs and assisting in the relinquishment/intake process and day-to-day activities of the Admissions and Animal Care areas, including direct supervision of Animal Services Department staff. Requirements

  • AA degree in related field or completion of sufficient coursework to successfully perform the required duties of the position, and three (3) years of full time related paid experience working with animals in a kennel, shelter, or veterinary hospital, or any equivalent combination of education and experience required.
  • Must obtain VACSP permit after employment.

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced training and/or instruction in field of animal care preferred.
  • One year experience as a supervisor highly preferred.
  • Bilingual skills a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise Animal Care Department staff including making recommendations for hiring, corrective action, and termination. In conjunction with the Animal Services Manager, coach staff for development and performance improvement and document appropriately when performance standards are not met. Complete Annual Career Development for direct reports.
  • In partnership with Animal Services leadership, oversee the daily care and husbandry of animals and appropriate reporting of concerns about animals in our care in accordance with SDHS policy.
  • Train new Admissions and Animal Care Department staff and work side-by-side with direct reports to ensure performance standards and department objectives are met. Create staff schedules, including coverage during holiday closures.
  • Assist and support Animal Caregivers, Admission Counselors and volunteers in resolving customer grievances and navigating challenging or complex situations as needed.
  • Provide orientation, training and feedback for assigned volunteers. Ensure volunteers are utilized to the fullest extent and are appreciated by staff members.
  • Assist with and perform euthanasia of animals according to AVMA guidelines; maintain SDHS certification as a certified euthanasia technician. Process euthanasia requests and paperwork in the absence of the Animal Services Manager.
  • Attend and contribute to campus meetings as a member of the leadership team and participate in SDHS special events throughout the year.
