Position Summary: The Residency Program Director administers and maintains an educational environment conducive to educating residents in each of the ACGME competency areas and in conformance with the BIDMC and HMFP policies and procedures. The Program Director is responsible for providing an educational experience that will enable resident physicians to obtain the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to practice their chosen specialty independently and competently. The Program Director is also responsible for maintaining ACGME accreditation and compliance of the core residency program.

Requirements

  • Specialty expertise and at least three years of documented educational and/or administrative experience, or qualifications acceptable to the ACGME Residency Review Committee
  • ABA Board Certified
  • Must include ongoing clinical activity
  • Must demonstrate ongoing academic achievements in anesthesiology, including publications, the development of educational programs, or the conduct of research
  • Progressive leadership experience with a track record of successful outcomes
  • Effective communication skills with the ability to foster strong, positive collaborative relationships
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills
  • Capable of working successfully within a team and across multiple departments
  • Exhibits strong mentoring and leadership skills
  • Demonstrates ability to make decisions and solve problems effectively and fairly
  • Possesses sound judgement when handling confidential matters, both clinically and professionally
  • Light work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force frequently to move objects. Some elements of the job are sedentary, and the employee will be required to stand for periods of time or move throughout the hospital campus.

Responsibilities

  • Provide an educational experience that will enable residents to obtain the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to practice anesthesia independently and competently
  • Oversee and ensure the quality of didactic and clinical education in all resident rotation sites
  • Review, update, and revise didactic and clinical educational curricula as needed
  • Collaborate with the Designated Institutional Official (DIO) and adhere to the governance rules set forth by the Graduate Medical Education (GME) and the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)
  • Develop, modify as necessary, and conduct the residency program in accordance with the program requirements to ensure the highest quality education and to maintain continuing full program accreditation by the ACGME.
  • Ensure resident are informed of and adhere to established educational and clinical practices, policies, and procedures
  • Maintain accurate and complete program files in compliance with ACGME requirements.
  • Develop action plans for correction of areas of noncompliance
  • Develop and use dependable measures to assess residents’ competence in patient care, medical knowledge, practice-based learning and improvement, interpersonal and communication skills, professionalism, and systems-based practice
  • Facilitate residents’ participation in the educational and scholarly activities of the program
  • Ensure the program’s policies regarding evaluation and performance feedback are followed for all residents within the program, and especially for non-succeeding residents
  • Advocate for resident and program needs and serve as confidential advisor and advocate for each resident
  • Maintain open lines of communication and support to Program Coordinators who are performing administrative duties on the program’s behalf
  • Maintain the highest standards of professional behavior and serve as a role model to all residents within the program
