About The Position

Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee is offering a 12-week Summer Project Grow Ag Intern position to undergraduate students enrolled in a relevant degree program (Agriculture, Environmental Studies, or a related field). Interns will be able to customize their schedule based on their current work and life commitments, as long as the hours are between 8:00 am - 4:30 pm (Monday through Friday). Interns are required to be available from 8:30 am - 4:30 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays from May 27-August 11. The intern is required to be on-site at the Ray Smith Family Distribution Center in Camden, TN with a weekly work commitment of 20 hours. The Project Grow Agriculture Intern will assist in implementing educational programs focused on sustainable agriculture, food security, and community engagement. The intern will work closely with the Manager, Donor Relations, to ensure successful delivery of programs. Please note: Intern will be in the sun for long periods of time. Intern will work in a standard farm environment that consists of pollen, dust, and grass. Position requires lifting and/or moving items (crate of produce, cooler of bottled water, large watermelons, tool bucket, etc.) up to 25 lbs. Position requires working individually, with a team, and leading a group of volunteers. Farm tools and aprons will be provided.

Requirements

  • Undergraduate students enrolled in a relevant degree program (Agriculture, Environmental Studies, or a related field)
  • Available from 8:30 am - 4:30 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays from May 27-August 11
  • On-site at the Ray Smith Family Distribution Center in Camden, TN
  • Weekly work commitment of 20 hours
  • Current driver’s license with copy of current auto insurance and acceptable Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) results required.
  • Acceptable Drug Test & Physical results required.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in maintaining Project Grow’s daily, weekly, and monthly tasks such as planting, weeding, watering, and harvesting produce from the field.
  • Follow the Project Grow Farm Food Safety Plan.
  • Wash, rinse, and sanitize tools, crates, and implements after each use.
  • Harvest produces according to size, color, and ripeness.
  • Enter data collected into Project Grow’s database for seed recording, poundage harvested, and any issues which arise in the field.
  • Lead a group of volunteers through a 2.5-hour Project Grow volunteer shift.
