About The Position

Lead the Craft of Repair in Chicago’s West Loop It’s 2:30 p.m. in Hydro, Inc.’s Aftermarket Pump Repair Shop. You step onto a clean, organized floor in the heart of the West Loop, where complex rotating equipment awaits your direction. As the second-shift leader (2:30 p.m. - 11:00 p.m.), you set the pace for safety, quality, and delivery—bringing together machinists, mechanics, and welders to restore industrial pumps with precision. Our mission is to partner with customers to optimize the performance and reliability of their pumping systems through root-cause analysis, unbiased engineering, quality workmanship, and responsive field service. A Day in This Role Oversee shop-floor activities for the 2nd shift, optimizing people, processes, and equipment to meet or exceed goals. Coordinate closely with assembly, inspection, and welding to control and monitor jobs across in-house departments. Communicate daily with the Shop Manager and provide smooth transition of in-process work to the next shift supervisor. Review drawings and complete blueprints, clearly explaining work to shop personnel. Partner with Engineers to resolve shop-floor issues and ensure technical accuracy. Meet customer deadlines by working to preset dates and driving timely completion. Direct purchasing on the correct materials for each job and verify materials are on site before work begins. Lead safe, efficient operations; train others and model adherence to company safety guidelines. Coordinate people and resources for emergency weekend work when required. Perform basic machining and tooling as needed; apply prior manual machining experience on large, refurbished parts using horizontal and vertical boring mills. Operate manual, pneumatic, hydraulic, and electric tools; use fork trucks and overhead cranes. Multi-task across multiple projects while solving repair challenges with exemplary leadership and communication. Perform various other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • 5+ years supervisory experience leading machinists, mechanics, and shop personnel in an industrial aftermarket setting.
  • Employee-focused leadership style with strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Manual machining background; experience on horizontal and vertical boring machines.
  • Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment with tight deadlines.
  • Good mathematical ability and strong print-reading skills; proficiency in Microsoft Office.
  • Experience using an ERP system is a plus.
  • Experience in an equipment repair shop—ideally pumps or power generation.
  • Basic foundation in manual machining and welding.
  • Minimum 5 years of supervisory experience.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Associate’s degree or higher is a plus.

Nice To Haves

  • 10+ years hands-on job shop repair, assembly, and disassembly for pumps, valves, and other rotating equipment.
  • At least 5 years as a team lead or supervisor.
  • Millwright mechanic or formal training from an accredited technical college/trade school; or completion of a multi‑year apprenticeship.
  • Ability to work shift work and overtime as needed.
  • Basic computer skills to operate a computer-based maintenance system.
  • Five or more years’ machining and tooling experience in a custom machine shop environment (desired).
  • Knowledge of working with electric motors.
  • Journeyman or U.S. Military experience desired.
