About The Position

First-Year & Transition Programs in the Office of Student Success seeks an Academic Specialist who will focus on retention by helping students make successful transitions in critical academic program areas through various interventions and initiatives. The role will assist with delivering programs focused on undergraduate students' needs, primarily those in their first year. The support of these kinds of retention initiatives is an essential part of Georgia State meeting the Strategic Plan's goals. This position is on the front line of the institutions' commitment to helping students from all backgrounds succeed at high rates. The selected individuals will work in conjunction with all resources on behalf of First-Year & Transition Programs to support undergraduate students' academic progression.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree and four years higher education experience in student success, academic advising, or related area
  • or a high school diploma or GED and eight years administrative experience
  • or a combination of education and related experience

Responsibilities

  • Administer and support retention and success programs, activities, and initiatives focusing on the support of undergraduate students and the university. Programs in First-Year and Transition Programs include Early Alert, Academic Coaching, Freshman Learning Communities, Keep Hope Alive, Student Success Workshops and special populations.
  • Be highly accessible to individual students, groups of students, and student organizations as advisors and mentors on academic and personal concerns that impact academic performance.
  • Serve as an academic coach to help students identify their academic potential and eliminate obstacles to their goals and objectives.
  • Provide programming, support, resources, and outreach to students in special populations.
  • Maintain records and provide narrative and/or written progress reports as directed, including program assessments/evaluations, budget reports, and program reports.
  • Use data and predictive analytics to design and implement timely and strategic interventions for student support.
  • Facilitate academic success workshops.
  • Partner with academic, enrollment, and student affairs departments on retention, progression, and graduation-oriented programming.
  • Assist with hiring, training, and supervision of graduate assistants, staff volunteers, student assistants, peer mentors, and volunteers.
  • Answer email inquiries from the relevant First-Year and Transition Programs email accounts sent by students, instructors, faculty, and staff.
  • Represent First-Year & Transition Programs at New Student Orientations and to teach GSU 1010.
  • Provides support to the wide range of programming within Student Success Programs and First-Year and Transition programs.
  • Attends New Student Orientation to support onboarding of first-year students.
  • Assist in the construction, design, and distribution of Student Success programming publication and resources.
  • Provide support to department initiatives such as Freshman Learning Communities and on boarding student activities including New Student Orientation.
