About The Position

Office of Inspector General (Special Investigations Unit) – Eastside Oregon Department of Corrections Are you detailed, dependable, and motivated by work that truly matters? The Oregon Department of Corrections (ODOC) is seeking an Administrative Specialist 2, Evidence Technician to join our Special Investigations Unit. In this critical role, you will help ensure the integrity of criminal evidence, support investigative efforts, and contribute directly to the safety and accountability of ODOC facilities across Oregon. This position is available for current regular status employees of the Oregon Department of Corrections or Oregon Corrections Enterprises. This position is a limited duration anticipated to last 12 months, though, may be extended or decreased due to business need. This position is anticipated to become permanent, pending on permanent funding. Final work location will be assigned based on State hiring requirements and operational needs at the time of appointment. The position is located at an Eastside approved institution (TRCI in Umatilla, EOCI in Pendleton, or SRCI in Ontario) and primarily supports those sites. Evidence Technicians work collaboratively to ensure timely and consistent statewide service. Frequent travel to ODOC institutions and facilities across the state is required, including occasional travel on short notice.

Requirements

  • Three years of secretarial or administrative support experience that includes coordinating office procedures, preparing narrative and statistical reports, and administrative data collection and analysis; OR An associate degree in general office occupations and two years of secretarial or administrative support experience that includes coordinating office procedures, preparing narrative and statistical reports, and administrative data collection and analysis; OR An equivalent combination of education and experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working in an evidence room, property room, law enforcement environment, or similar setting requiring strict chain‑of-custody procedures.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain accurate and complete evidence records, including receiving, tracking, reconciling, and documenting evidence using established procedures or evidence‑tracking systems.
  • Experience conducting presumptive field tests on controlled substances and preparing clear, factual written reports of test results.
  • Knowledge of State and Federal requirements related to evidence handling, retention, and disposal, along with experience applying agency or departmental procedures and guidelines.
  • Experience performing quality assurance checks, identifying errors, and taking corrective action to maintain compliance and evidence integrity.
  • Experience managing secure storage areas, transporting sensitive materials between locations, and maintaining complete chain‑of-custody documentation.
  • Experience preparing concise, error‑free written reports that follow established formats or protocols.

Responsibilities

  • Receiving, logging, and securely storing evidence submitted from ODOC facilities.
  • Reviewing evidence handling processes to ensure compliance with established protocols and correcting any errors when possible.
  • Conducting field tests on suspected illicit substances and preparing formal written reports of the results.
  • Maintaining accurate, detailed tracking records and chain-of-custody documentation for all evidence.
  • Managing SIU evidence lockers across ODOC facilities and ensuring they remain compliant and secure.
  • Transporting evidence to short‑term SIU storage (SRCI, TRCI, and Central Administration) and long‑term storage at Central Administration.
  • Regularly reviewing and destroying eligible evidence following conclusion of cases and in alignment with evidence disposition protocols.
  • Ensuring precision, accuracy, and professionalism in all aspects of evidence documentation and handling.
