About The Position

The City of Carson, in collaboration with California State University Dominguez Hills, is excited to announce the 2025-2026 Internship and Mentorship program. This program is open to currently enrolled junior, senior, or graduate students attending a local university. About the program: The program is designed to bring fresh perspectives and innovative ideas to City services and programs, while providing students with hands-on public service experience. It also aims to cultivate a talent pipeline for the City's future workforce and help shape the next generation of professionals. Participants will have the opportunity to learn about various departments within the public sector and engage in meaningful project-based assignments that align with their academic and career goals. The City of Carson has ten (10) Administrative Intern for Mentorship Program positions available for the 2025-2026 cohort within the following potential areas of exploration: City Manager's Office Innovation & Sustainability IT & Security Public Safety & Emergency Management Community & Economic Development Human Services Community Services

Requirements

  • Must be enrolled as a junior, senior or graduate student at a local university, preferably California State University Dominguez Hills (CSU DH), with a GPA of 2.8 or higher.
  • Modern English usage.
  • Mathematics, including statistics.
  • Research and analytical methods.
  • Personal computers and related software applications (such as Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Teams).
  • Methods of report presentation.
  • Compile, review and evaluate data.
  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Learn City organization, operations, policies and objectives.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Deal tactfully with the public.

Responsibilities

  • Performs research, compiles data and prepares reports related to administrative and operational matters.
  • Conducts surveys and studies and makes recommendations based on findings.
  • Assists with file maintenance, data entry and generates reports using a variety of computer software programs.
  • Prepares written correspondence.
  • Participates in the preparation and revision of brochures and other administrative materials.
  • Works with other professional employees assigned to special work projects.
  • Provides information to and consults with staff and the public.
  • Operates a variety of office machines, including a personal computer.
  • Attends meetings or events in the evening or on weekends.
  • May drive to different locations to perform work, site inspections/surveys or attend meetings within and outside the City.
  • Performs related duties as required.

Benefits

  • Employee will receive no benefits except they will be covered under City's worker's compensation insurance and to the extent benefits are required to be provided under State law.
