About The Position

About this Role: The Law and Justice Mentorship Program (LJMP) is a pipeline initiative aimed at connecting high school students of color, historically underrepresented in the legal profession, to critical pre-law opportunities and mentorship. In the paid summer internship, students gain exposure to new tasks, information and personnel while on the job. This program is an extension of the school-year LJMP. The Program Advisor acts as a liaison between students, partner law firms, and Heights Philadelphia. The Program Advisor also enters data and tracks records required by Heights Philadelphia. This position will report to the Manager of Partnerships.

Requirements

  • Undergraduate or graduate student with at least one year of experience working with youth
  • Experienced at negotiating between multiple partner organizations (law firms, School District of Philadelphia, City agencies, etc.)
  • Familiar with data and reporting systems
  • Proactive in tracking paperwork and communicating expectations to students
  • Demonstrated growth mindset, openness to feedback, and commitment to continuous improvement
  • Passionate about mentoring young people
  • Organized and adept at multi-tasking
  • Must meet expectations to report in-person on a schedule determined by their direct manager and/or the Vice President of the team.
  • Must meet PA State background check requirements [PA Criminal, PA Child Abuse and FBI Fingerprint Check] at hire and every five years thereafter.
  • Strong orientation to customer service, particularly with regard to students, partners and colleagues
  • Proficiency in Google Suite, Microsoft Office and related applications, as well as use of general office equipment (phones, computers, copiers, etc)
  • Fluency in the use of data and data systems. Maintains appropriate engagement with data entry, reporting and review.
  • Must adhere to COVID safety guidelines as established by Heights and/or its partners. Office-based staff should be mindful of the organization’s strong recommendation that staff maintain up to date with COVID vaccination and boosters. Site-based staff must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and must submit to any COVID testing or other health screenings as required by the Department of Human Services and/or the School District of Philadelphia.
  • Must be able to work in a busy, often complex work environment that is generally climate controlled.
  • Must be able to lift up to 20 pounds unassisted on an occasional basis.
  • Must be able to sit for long periods of time.
  • Must be able to stand or walk for long periods of time.
  • Access to reliable transportation required

Nice To Haves

  • experience in the field of law is beneficial, but not required
  • familiar with Salesforce (preferred)

Responsibilities

  • Administrative support: distribution of transpasses, cash cards for lunch, and student emergency funds.
  • Inputting accurate student information into Heights’ Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system.
  • Verifying work eligibility paperwork (birth certificates, social security cards, IDs, etc.) to fulfill JEVS requirements; following up with students to ensure all paperwork is complete; organizing secure files for paperwork.
  • Ensuring complete security clearances from all partner agencies; supporting security clearance process, coordinating clearances and verifying clearance completion.
  • Managing contact with students’ immediate internship supervisors.
  • Verifying and tracking student hours in order to ensure student stipend payment.
  • Corresponding with students regarding internship programming in order to ensure successful completion; addressing student concerns or barriers.
