About The Position

This position is for an Adjunct Teacher in Psychology, specifically to teach Psych 111: Psychological Science. The course will be delivered as an on-demand remote class during Fall Semester 2026. The instructor is expected to cover foundational principles of psychological science, including its history, basic research methods, brain anatomy and functioning, biological bases of behavior, cognition, perception, attention, human development, emotion, personality, psychological disorders, health psychology, positive psychology, social relationships, and social behavior. Instruction should prioritize critical thinking, scientific inquiry, and real-world application. The department emphasizes belonging, student mentoring, a collegial culture, and open/reproducible research. A key aspect of the role involves helping students integrate faith and reason in understanding human thoughts, feelings, virtues, and behaviors, aligning with the university's unique mission and values.

Requirements

  • MS or PhD in psychology, neuroscience, or a related field.
  • Required degree must be completed by the start date.
  • Commitment to excellence in undergraduate teaching and mentoring.
  • Successful candidate to relocate and/or reside in Utah for the duration of their employment.

  • If a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, hold and be worthy to hold a current temple recommend.

Responsibilities

  • Teach Psych 111 (Psychological Science).
  • Have the knowledge and ability to teach about the foundational principles of psychological science, including the history of psychology as a science, basic research methods and designs, general brain anatomy and functioning, biological bases of behavior, cognition, perception and attention, human development, emotion, personality, psychological disorders, general principles of health psychology and positive psychology, social relationships, and social behavior.
  • Emphasize critical thinking, scientific inquiry, and real-world application in instruction.
  • Help students explore how faith and reason can work together in understanding human thoughts, feelings, virtues, and behaviors.
  • Live a life of loyalty to Jesus Christ and His restored Church and align yourself with doctrine and teachings declared by living prophets, seers, and revelators (if a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints).
  • Demonstrate intentionality in building faith in Jesus Christ and testimony of His restored gospel among students and others in the BYU community.
  • Teach your subject matter with the Spirit of God and strive to keep it “bathed in the light and color of the restored gospel” (Spencer W. Kimball) (if a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints).
  • Understand and commit to the Mission of Brigham Young University and the AIMS of a BYU Education (if not a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints).
