About The Position

University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC) seeks adjunct faculty to teach on-site at La Plata, MD for the Accounting program, specifically for the Accounting for Managers (ACCT 605) course. This course provides a fundamental study of financial accounting and its use in managerial decision-making, covering financial statements, cost behavior, budgeting, performance measurement, and control systems. The objective is to use cost-volume-profit analysis for pricing and product mix decisions, and to create and analyze budgets for planning and controlling business activities. Emphasis is placed on critical thinking about accounting information and its use in managerial decision-making, with activities providing practical experience in financial statement analysis, cost behavior analysis, budgeting, and performance measurement. UMGC is a mission-driven institution serving approximately 90,000 adult learners globally, including a significant number of active-duty service members, reservists, National Guard members, veterans, and family members. As an adjunct faculty member, the role involves actively engaging students, guiding them in collaborative and problem-based learning, providing constructive feedback, demonstrating subject-matter expertise, and offering feedback on curricular improvements. UMGC is committed to supporting faculty professional success and requires new faculty to complete an online two-week new faculty orientation, FacDev 411.

Requirements

  • Terminal degree in Accounting or a related field from an accredited institution of higher learning
  • Professional experience in Accounting or related field
  • This position is specifically to teach on site at La Plata, MD.
  • If selected, candidates with international degrees may be required to submit a translation/degree evaluation from a NACES approved vendor.
  • Each new faculty member is required to successfully complete our online two-week new faculty orientation, FacDev 411, as a condition of hire.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience teaching adult learners online and in higher education is strongly preferred
  • Certification such as the CPA, CIA, CISA, or CFE

Responsibilities

  • Actively engage students through frequent interaction that motivates them to succeed, and conveys a genuine energy and enthusiasm for their learning.
  • Guide students in active collaboration and the application of their learning in problem- and project-based learning demonstrations.
  • Provide rich and regular constructive feedback, utilizing rubrics effectively for the assessment of student work, and acknowledging student accomplishments.
  • Demonstrate relevant and current subject-matter expertise, and help students connect concepts across their academic program.
  • Provide feedback to your program chair on possible curricular improvements.
