About The Position

Aventia is seeking an accomplished Accounts Payable Manager with a minimum of 10 years of progressive experience to lead and strengthen the Accounts Payable function within our environmental consulting practice. This senior-level role is instrumental in ensuring the accuracy, efficiency, and integrity of our project-based financial operations. You will oversee the full lifecycle of AP activities—including invoice processing, vendor relations, expense compliance, and month-end close—while supporting operational excellence within the organization. In this role, you will directly supervise the Accounts Payable team (including one or more AP staff members). You will provide guidance, coaching, and performance oversight to ensure timely, high-quality financial output. You will be responsible for maintaining strong internal controls, optimizing workflows, and partnering closely with Project Accounting, FP&A, Procurement, and Operations to enhance financial transparency and operational efficiency. The ideal candidate is a Deltek Vantagepoint expert who thrives in a fast-paced professional services environment and brings a continuous-improvement mindset. You should be confident in evaluating and refining processes, collaborating across departments, and implementing best practices that support scalable growth.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related.
  • 10+ years of experience in Accounts Payable with at least 3–5 years managing staff in an official leadership or supervisory capacity.
  • Proficiency in Deltek Vantagepoint (or Deltek Vision) or similar ERP/accounting systems preferred.
  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Excel.
  • Exceptional attention to detail, organization, and financial accuracy.
  • Excellent communication skills, including effective vendor negotiation.
  • Strong understanding of project-based accounting.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor and support the development of other team members.
  • Ability to travel for training and work-related meetings.
  • Ability to sit or stand for extended periods while reviewing reports, attending meetings, or working at a computer

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience in environmental consulting, engineering, or AEC (Architecture, Engineering, and Construction) firms is highly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Direct the full-cycle AP process, including vendor invoices, employee expense reports, and sub-consultant payments, with accurate coding to project-based work.
  • Manage, mentor, and develop the Accounts Payable team, including conducting performance reviews and overseeing daily workload distribution.
  • Serve as the subject matter expert for Deltek Vantagepoint, optimizing system workflows and ensuring the accuracy and integrity of financial data.
  • Perform reporting and analysis using advanced Excel functions such as VLOOKUPs and PivotTables to support spend analysis, cash flow forecasting, and month-end reconciliations.
  • Lead 1099 processing, manage sales and use tax compliance, and function as the primary point of contact for internal and external AP audits.
  • Identify, recommend, and implement process improvements and automated solutions to enhance efficiency in invoice processing and expense management.
