About The Position

The Land Trust of Santa Cruz County is a nonprofit organization that is at the forefront of environmental conservation in Santa Cruz County by protecting, caring for, and stewarding more than 19,000 acres of important habitat and farmland over the last 48 years. The Land Trust is seeking a detailed, organized, and collaborative Accounting Clerk to join our Admin + Ops team in support of our conservation work. The ideal candidate has the experience and skills to accurately complete accounting transactions across all departments and functions and who cares about the Land Trust’s mission.

Requirements

  • Basic to intermediate computer skills (especially data entry) and ability to quickly learn new tech platforms and tools.
  • Able to work in front of a computer screen for hours at a time.
  • Demonstrated strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Highly accurate and organized in all aspects of work.
  • Ability to work independently, troubleshoot issues, and focus with occasional distractions.
  • Must be able to maintain confidentiality and discretion.

Nice To Haves

  • Nonprofit accounting experience and familiarity with QuickBooks Desktop.
  • High proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Excel.
  • Appreciation and care for the Land Trust’s conservation work.
  • Familiarity with Santa Cruz County.

Responsibilities

  • Perform accounts payable functions using multiple payment platforms, code expenses, obtain expense approvals, maintain vendor documentation, and respond to vendor and payment inquiries.
  • Enter payroll adjustments and process semi-weekly payroll.
  • Record online and check donations and prepare and make bank deposits.
  • Record general payments and merchandise sales transactions.
  • Prepare document and data compilation for grant invoicing and other financial reports.
  • Reconcile transactions between databases to ensure data accuracy.
  • Import credit card and reimbursement transactions into accounting software.
  • Prepare property tax forms and adjustments.
  • Request insurance certificates and coverage.
  • Oversee vendor profiles in accounting software.
  • Staff Land Trust events. All staff are expected to actively work at least 40 hours per year at Land Trust events usually held in the evenings and weekends. These include two mandatory 'all hands-on deck' events that require full staff participation. Your involvement plays a vital role in advancing our mission and fostering our connection with the public.
  • Other duties as assigned.
