About The Position

The Calvert County Department of Finance & Budget is seeking an Accountant I to join a mission-driven team where your work directly supports the services that keep Calvert County running strong. This is an excellent opportunity for an entry-level accountant to gain hands-on experience in governmental accounting while building a stable and rewarding public service career. Performs professional accounting and budgeting work in maintaining accounts. Work requires fully developed accounting skills. Worker receives assignments and direction from technical supervisors. Essential Job Functions Performs monthly journal entries, reconciliations of balance sheet accounts, and month-end closing process. Ensures transactions are in compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, Government Accounting Standards Board, local, state and federal laws. Assists in preparing schedules and other supporting documents to substantiate the financial statements for ACFR (Annual Comprehensive Financial Report) and the Official Statement. Participates in the year-end general ledger closing process, preparation for the County’s annual audit, and preparation of the County’s ACFR. Reviews, analyzes, prepares, and posts budget adjustments or journal entries for expense, revenue, and contingency accounts. Assists with the coordination and development of the various phases of the budget process as directed. Provides technical assistance regarding budgeting and accounting procedures. Assists with capital projects accounting system (adjusting/maintaining balances through budget adjustments, journal postings, setting up new projects, and monitoring purchase orders). Monitors project progress on a regular basis. Completes assigned accounting-related projects. Compiles and analyzes financial data. Determines adequacy, analyzes, and improves accounting processes and systems. Other Duties Assists in the audit process. Performs related work as required.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of-- Accounting principles and practices as applied to accounting and fiscal reporting for public agencies.
  • Administrative practices and procedures as applied to the operations of an accounting department.
  • Ability to-- Maintain an assigned group of accounts within an accounting system.
  • Prepare financial statements.
  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Deal effectively with the public.
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting.
  • Two years of accounting experience preferably in governmental or fund accounting.
