About The Position

We are looking for an Account Manager (Outside Sales Representative) to join our Rexel team in Sparks Glencoe, MD! Summary: We are seeking a results-driven Account Manager (Outside Sales Representative) to develop and grow government and municipal business across a defined territory, with an emphasis on water and wastewater accounts. This role will build and maintain long-term relationships with county and city procurement, engineering, operations, and maintenance teams to drive both transactional and contract-based sales of automation, electrical products, and services. The right candidate combines technical knowledge of product specifications and RFP processes with strong relationship-building, territory management, and field sales skills.

Requirements

  • Valid Driver’s License
  • High School or GED - Required
  • 3+ years outside sales experience selling to government, municipal, or utility customers preferred
  • Technical aptitude with electrical, automation, instrumentation, controls, or related product categories; able to interpret specifications and drawings
  • Proven experience preparing RFP/RFQ responses, quotations, and managing public procurement processes
  • Strong communication, negotiation, and relationship-building skills
  • Self-motivated, organized, and comfortable working independently in a field-based role with regular travel across the territory
  • Customer Focus: Builds trust and long-term relationships; attentive to government buyers’ unique needs
  • Technical Savvy: Reads and applies product specifications and technical documents; coordinates technical resources
  • Project & Time Management: Manages multiple opportunities and deadlines (bids/RFPs) effectively
  • Problem Solving: Crafts compliant, cost-effective solutions for municipal projects
  • Communication: Clear, professional verbal and written communication with internal and external stakeholders

Nice To Haves

  • Demonstrated experience in water/wastewater markets strongly preferred
  • Knowledge of municipal procurement rules, bidding processes, cooperative purchasing, and contracting is highly desirable

Responsibilities

  • Proactively identify and qualify municipal and county opportunities in your territory (water and wastewater plants, municipal utilities, public works, etc.)
  • Build and maintain a prioritized account plan for key municipalities, counties, and utility districts
  • Grow both single-order and contract (term/indefinite delivery) business with government buyers
  • Visit municipalities, treatment plants, and related facilities to meet procurement, engineering, operations, maintenance, and decision-makers
  • Develop trusted advisor relationships and a clear understanding of each customer’s needs, budgets, timelines, and procurement cycles
  • Represent the company professionally at pre-bid meetings, site visits, and vendor days
  • Understand basic electrical, instrumentation and control, and automation product specifications relevant to water/wastewater projects and other municipality usage
  • Collaborate with internal technical resources and product managers to produce compliant solutions and recommend appropriate products, control systems, and services
  • Connect customers and specialists for technical guidance and response to specification questions
  • Partner with project team for development of proposals, RFQ/RFP responses, and quotations for municipal government projects
  • Ensure bids are accurate, compliant with specifications and procurement requirements, correctly priced, and submitted on time
  • Coordinate internally (estimators, product specialists, legal/compliance, services) to assemble complete responses and scope of work
  • Pursue and manage municipal contracts and cooperative purchasing opportunities (piggyback contracts, IDIQs)
  • Support order placement and follow through to ensure timely delivery and coordination with services teams (installation, commissioning, service contracts)
  • Monitor project progress and maintain customer communication through implementation
  • Meet or exceed territory sales targets, margin, and KPI objectives
  • Maintain accurate CRM records (activity, pipeline, forecasts, opportunities)
  • Provide timely market feedback, competitor intelligence, and opportunity reports to management
  • Other duties as assigned
