About The Position

Under general supervision of the Manager of Electronic Services or designee, the Access Control Technician performs skilled work at the journeyman level of electronic access control systems for all campus buildings and other assigned areas. This role involves installing, maintaining, programming, and troubleshooting electronic card access systems and/or operating errors. The technician is also responsible for maintaining access and alarm system interfaces as well as other custom applications such as CCTV.

Requirements

Possess thorough knowledge, skills, and ability necessary for the installation, troubleshooting, repair and prevention maintenance and applied maintenance in all types of electronic controls, CCTV and interfaces during routine and emergency situations.
Demonstrated ability to handle repairs and large scale maintenance requirements utilizing group work.
Skilled in using tools and electronic diagnostic equipment.
Knowledge of lock and alarm systems (electronic and semi-electronic or electrical access).
Knowledge of current technological developments/trends.
Knowledge and familiarity with the computer operation and structure of University of Delaware standard word processing, database, electronic mail, with additional capability to use computer programming and operation; data communication equipment and protocol; and associated hardware and software.
Familiarity with systems compatible to Honeywell, ProWatch, Key Watcher, Vista security systems, Engage (Schlage Electronic Locks) and other operating systems used at the University of Delaware.
Ability to work from electrical schematics and drawings.
Working knowledge of standard practices, tools, materials and terminology concerning the use of testing equipment.
Knowledge of hazards and safety precautions.
Mechanical ability.
Ability to use hand and power tools.
Ability to perform preventive maintenance according to vendor and/or University published guidelines.
Ability to use oscilloscope, Simpson multi meter, electronic test equipment (including both commercial and in-house designed and manufactured).
Ability to troubleshoot and repair controls and systems alarms, and other electronic control systems such as CCTV, and other electronic control systems.
Ability to perform complex tasks and to prioritize multiple projects.
Ability to work from complex diagrams and drawings related to various controls and alarm systems, and other electronic control systems.
Ability to understand and follow safety procedures such as the University of Delaware lock out tag out system and PPE use.
Ability to comprehend and follow verbal and written instructions.
Strong analytical problem solving and communications skills are essential.
Ability to work both independently and cooperatively with all levels of staff.
Proven ability to make independent decisions and demonstrate integrity, discretion, and good judgment.
Ability to interact professionally, communicate effectively and interact well with people of all ages and diverse backgrounds throughout the University community and must be customer service oriented.
Ability to provide technical leadership with outside vendors and other University personnel.
Thorough knowledge of U/D campus layout.

Capability of working independently and prioritizing tasks in order to meet the needs of the unit and its customers.
High school diploma, GED or equivalent.
4 years’ experience as an access control technician.
Two years’ experience and/or training in the electronics field.
Completion of advanced related courses of study within the trade.
Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot access control systems faults.
Ability to exert 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or 10 to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects and job-related materials and/or equipment, with or without assistance.
Ability to accurately discern colors.
Ability to climb stairs, use ladders and aerial lifts, work from scaffolding and high areas using appropriate harness and tether equipment, and use ramps and aerial lift devices above ground.
Possess a valid motor vehicle operator’s license.
Complete the basic ProWatch certification course within 1 year of employment and maintain the certification.
Complete the advanced ProWatch certification course when the course becomes available after completing the basic ProWatch certification course.

Responsibilities

Installs, programs and maintains electronic card access systems, door alarms, CCTV, system interfaces, handicap entrances and parking gates; recommends system upgrades and responds to technical and/or upgrade inquiries.
Determines what parts are required, including electronic interfaces; locates the part, order parts and materials as needed, including making parts if necessary.
Creates and/or installs new parts as required, including electronic interfaces.
Conducts on-site training sessions for other U.D. mechanics and vendor staff.
Programs operating system commands in system software, troubleshoots software operating errors.
Assists in data communications design, installation and repairs; installs network communication devices including serial interface devices such as Lantronix systems.
Maintains access card record embedded in software, Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) systems dedicated to access control, and time and material records.
Prepares work reports in accordance with departmental standards.
Conducts related maintenance inspections and preventative maintenance on systems such as UPS, electric strikes, security systems, life safety emergency buttons, and Lantronix Cobox systems.
Uses computer to access e-mail, receive work instructions and other administrative information to include electronic payroll forms.
Communicates daily using a two-way radio, and/or phone system in order to respond to work-related routine and emergency information.
Ensures shop equipment and diagnostic tools are in proper working condition including the access system host computer.
Performs housekeeping duties to maintain a clean, uncluttered and safe work environment.
