The Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services (DPSCS) is seeking dedicated candidates to fill important roles within our department. The incumbent instruct a designed curriculum within the assigned Correctional Entrance Level Training Academy in order to ensure compliance with standards established by the Professional Development and Training Division and Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission (MPCTC), or other regulatory agency having jurisdiction. The incumbent will also assist academy students as mentors or coaches to resolve any logistical or programmatic issues to insure all curriculums is disseminated in a professional and adult based learning manner. The incumbent is the first contact with all newly hired Correctional Officers, therefore must exhibit a high level of professionalism both within and outside the classroom setting. As a CO III, the incumbent has lead responsibility for newly hired Correctional Officers assigned to the CELTP program and CO II instructors.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or high school equivalency certificate acceptable to the Maryland State Board of Education as described in the Correctional Training Commission regulation.
  • Three years of experience as a Correctional Officer involving the custody and security of adult inmates.
  • Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.
  • Employees in this classification may be required to operate busses for the transportation of inmates. Employees assigned such duties will be required to acquire a Class B Commercial Driver's License with passenger and air brakes endorsements valid in the State of Maryland.
  • Employees who have not already done so must meet the selection standards required and successfully complete the training prescribed by the Maryland Correctional Training Commission for a correctional officer during their probationary period, (Correctional Services Article, Section 8-209). Selection standards for correctional officer training are listed in detail in the Code of Maryland Regulations Title 12, Subtitle 10, Chapter 01 and include the following: U.S. Citizenship or Resident Alien status Must be at least 21 years of age A completed background investigation Oral interview Physical examination.
  • Employees in this classification hired or reinstated on or after July 1, 2016 shall successfully complete the Entrance Level Firearms Training prescribed by the Maryland Correctional Training Commission (Code of Maryland 12.10.04.04 and 12.10.04.05) and demonstrate practical knowledge and proficiency in the safe use and care of firearms on a periodic basis.
  • Employees in this classification are subject to call-in 24 hours a day and, therefore, must provide the employing agency with a telephone number where they can be reached.
  • Employees in this classification are subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with Code of Maryland Regulations 17.04.09, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.
  • This position is limited to current Department of Public Safety & Correctional Services employees who are Correctional Officer Sergeants and or eligible for Sergeants.
  • Applicant must be a current Defensive Tactics Instructor.
